Well you have a choice of two places, either in through a big plug underneath the r.h trumpet housing to the centre box.....although on the newer machines this has been blanked off...............or...............put it in through the filler cap at back on the top cover.
What I have done just to ensure that the box breathes well enough is to drill the plug through slightly oversize to a 1/2" bulkhead connector, then weld a big flat washer around the top to for a bit of a cap then on the inside weld/braze another washer around to keep it in place......the fitting will be free to jiggle around a bit, but should be tight enough to stop stones, drawbar pins etc. going in beside it
Used to run an 885 with the oil returning as mentioned through the filler bung which had been drilled to take a female connector with the internal valve removed-worked fine with the loader or bale wrapper etc.
If you are going to get the bits for the jd take the ih bung with you. Mike will probably have an adapter you could screw straight in then a 1/2" 90deg swept elbow on that then a 1/2" carrier
If it is for a flail it would be best using the big plug under axle on side of rear casing drill or burn a hole in it and weld a coupling on to take your hose 1/2 inch will be fine
