Free Fluke Test

Free fluke test!

Do you have a problem with liver fluke or rumen fluke infections in your animals? If so we would like your help!

Our project aims to develop a kit for farmers to determine whether their animals are infected with liver fluke or rumen fluke, which would save time and money on unnecessary worming.

We are looking for farms (especially any with triclabendazole resistant liver fluke) who would be interested in finding out if their animals have liver fluke or rumen fluke. We would send you a kit to collect faeces (instructions and short questionnaire included), free return post to us and then we would report back to you with your results. The test and feedback is free (normally costs £15). All information collected will be confidential and will not be passed on to any third party.

Please contact us if you are interested in taking part [email protected] – deadline 13th March 2017

@FlukEVal is it based on the ''Flukefinder''?

The project is aiming to develop a diagnostic kit using exosome-like vesicles excreted by liver and rumen fluke.

The test that we are offering above is a faecal egg count (sedimentation technique) similar to the Flukefinder to help us identify farms with a fluke problem, especially any that may have resistance to triclabendazole.

Does your test differentiate between liver fluke and rumen fluke ?
For cattle I would have thought this was esential.

Is anything similar happening in Ireland?

Presumably people will have to wait until after the withdrawal period for the last drench used.
It will vary from farm to farm depending if your animals are housed or not and when you last treated for fluke. We will test any sample sent to us, but yes, it would be ideal not to sample within 14 days of the last treatment.

Using the questionnaire we will work out the drug history and see how that compares to the results of the fluke test. If you suspect resistance, you could send a sample pre-treatment and then 14 days post treatment (faecal egg count reduction test) - the details would be discussed over email.
