Free soil sampling, no-till farms - by University of Sheffield

Hi all,

my colleague Dr. Manoj Menon and I are working together to understand social and physical factors influencing the success of no-till methods. We are looking for farmers in the North of England who may be interested in having their soils sampled and analysed by our students (4-5, undergraduate and MA).

You can learn more about us here: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/geography/staff/anna_krzywoszynska/home ; https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/geography/staff/manoj_menon .

We are particularly interested in analysing soil on farms which are experimenting with no-till, so where part of the fields is still under 'normal' cultivation.

If you are interested, please get in touch. We would visit your farm with our students twice this autumn: once to have a chat about your growing methods, and get the lie of the land, and once to do the sampling (core sampling only - no big holes).

You would receive the full analysis for free: we will characterise soil structure, and measure soil carbon and soil nitrogen.

If you have any questions, or want to participate, please get in touch!

I believe that BASE-UK are conducting some trial work along these lines with no till and full tillage plots in the same field. Perhaps these sites would prove useful?

@Jim Bullock ?
Thanks Dan - part of our task will be to train students in soil analysis, so we'll need to do the work ourselves, however I am aware of BASE UK's work and it is useful! Ta, Anna
