Free Trees for Wales

there was a scheme locally, where Western Power applied for planning permission to put in a new line for Brechfa Wind Farm, as part of the planning, there was a section 106 agreement for habitat improvement. It was administered by Carmarthenshire County Council. It worked really well, one application per farm, simple application and paid out with far less hassle than the glastir payments. I used it to double fence a hedge bank rather than a single fence, then planted a hedge on the bank. Schemes like that are really good. Basically the money paid for the second fence, then I was quite happy to pay for the hedge plants, mind you just been told whips have doubled in price since last year (from about 25p for quick thorn to nearly 50p). Problem is, any government scheme becomes so bureaucratic it is hard work to apply.

Ironically I asked at a garden centre on Friday, for beech plants.

Was told all broadleaf plants were in short supply- and they had none coming in for months..

Yes but you have a bit of knowledge on growing stuff.
I bet a huge proportion of these give away trees don`t survive the 1st 12 months

It'll be like the 'National Forestation Day' they had in Turkey a couple of years ago, when 11 million trees were planted in a day, including setting a new world record of 303k trees planted in a single hour in one location.
A year or so later, it was estimated that 90% of those saplings had already died. :censored:

I really don't get it about trees. So they are meant to lock up carbon....indefinitely?

A tree grows creating timber. It does so by absorbing minerals from the soil and creating wood by photosynthesis using carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. So that's a good thing!

Then the tree dies (as does everything) and gets eaten by bugs. The bugs digest/eat the wood (rotting it) creating energy by digestion....a process that generates CO2. So that's a bad thing!

How is that locking up the carbon we have put into the atmosphere from consuming/burning coal and oil for fuel for hundreds of years? Unless we can replace the coal and oil with the CO2, we're buggered, aren't we?

Isn't it a case of the emperor's clothes all over again?

Globally we are probably felling at least 3 mature trees for ever 1 tree that is planted. For tree planting to have any capacity to offset fossil fuel use then first global tree cover has to be increasing. I do not comprehend the new math that must have been invented because in my lessons I was taught 3-1 is not >3 :scratchhead: We plant trees to offset felling tree and we are not even managing to come close to achieving that!

Well, one could use a part of it to make a well made table that doesn't have a planned obsolescence, or a spoon, or a dashboard, box, basket etc.... Replacing the use of plastic AND sequestering for a longer time, just may help.

The point is, it ALL has obsolescence and pretending that we are going to just lock up carbon just heaps the responsibility onto our descendants.

We are dooomed!:sorry:

We should all being doing our bit, but I don't see how covering Britain in tree's is going to help the situation when large areas are still being felled and not replanted in many other countries. As always Britain has forgotten that it's a small speck on the earth and what we do will have very little impact. But we should do what we can and planting trees in everyone's back garden is only going to create problems.

why are we burning wood in Drax then? Well I know the answer, because the "carbon cost" is set against Canada or the USA's ledger and for us, we can class it as Carbon Neutral so all the politicians can pat themselves on the back!

exactly!
(although in fact, the growing tree is made up of pretty much neat carbon and water)

what i loved about this announcement was that trees would be available from 4 varying outlets, for those wanting to (drive to) collect them........

So that's an acre of land per household per year, how many years before the UK is wall to wall trees and having to buy in land for trees?
Come along to the North Norfolk coast,we are losing land to coastal erosion because there are no funds to protect the coastline.Perhaps the tree huggers would consider caring for the land so that some is remaining on which to plant said trees.
