Check the viscous coupling unit underneath too. Cv is usually a clicking on full lock rather than a clunk. Although will clunk if left too long. Also check wheel bearings.

Where is clonking coming from ? If middle or rear of car itll be the viscous unit or rear diff. Very very common in the FL1
I don't know where clonk is coming from as it is advertised online and the seller was honest to say about it
I am looking for vehicle as a runaround and can be diy maintained
But by the sound of things this one can stay where it is

They used to break the front mounting on the rear suspension, there was a captive nut in a box section that would break free and knock like a demented blacksmith on an anvil. To repair it you had to cut the floor and weld it from the top, then reinforce it after wards. It a pain in the rear to do if done quickly but a nightmare if it been neglected for a time....................................................

Rear diff mounting bushes gone when you turn their is a slight wind up between front and rear axle.this causes the rear differential to push up at the front .if the bush is gone it

I did not realise what poor quality freelanders are , so I am thinking of a
Qashgai instead
The first Freelanders were average when new, and are ancient now... What do you expect.
The very large firm I do some subcontractor work for is de-fleeting a very large number of company Quashqi due to a horrendously high failure rate, so I wouldn't get over excited about them.

The 'portfolio' of the last Rover 200, MGF & Freelander 1 were the last cars to be developed before BMW really got stuck into Rover Group. All 3 were a bit interesting on the outside, but shoestring engineered underneath. The 2 'cars' had a lot of R8 (prev rover 200) and metro respectively in them; the Freelander had a mostly car powertrain, but the rest was (cheaply) from scratch.

To be fair, the vision was excellent, as just like disco 1, they foresaw what has grown into a massive segment.
