Have heard of one guy charging £3.50 a head and another charging £4 both for 3 numbers. Had a guy recently do 4 numbers for us and holding the irons on for a bit longer to burn the hair off as the cattle are red and hard to see the numbers , he charged us £15 a head, needless to say he won’t be back

Wow - we used to pay £5.50 for 4 numbers/2 lines. We've since added a letter so now we pay £6.50. That includes a dozen red animals per year which are the same price as the black ones.

I leave the number on for 50 seconds with dry ice and 40 with liquid nitrogen.

£6.90 for 4 digits. Does a good job and most importantly is good with the calves, nice and quiet. He was here 2 hours 10 mins for 26 calves, helped run them into the pen. He then has travel time / cost of his van and dry ice etc. so he's not making a fortune.

From recollection our guy does...
30 seconds on black
60 seconds on white
Go 4 digits, matched to last 4 of ear tag, so useful for testing etc. Never have to cross reference a brand to a tag again.

Anyone here heard of this steel thing you put in a heifers mouth and they chew it, calms them down for branding? Called a pacifier? (Not the Electric)

Yeah, our brander brings one. Makes a real difference to helping them stand still.

How many other cattles mouths has it been in? Other farms? Disease?
We had a guy who tried to get us to use one, we now do it ourselves with tyres in a squeeze crush and they don’t move

I want to buy one, I heard they're less than a hundred quid , worth it for tidy brands.
But can't find one on line

We don;t seem to have a problem with fidgeting - this year in particular they stood like rocks. We brand at 8-9 months old. 2 tyres in the crush, head yoke - and this seems to be the important bit - someone standing directly in front of the yoke.
