If you'd read the link, they'd condemned the invasion . Russian Tennis teams are banned. Rightly.
If you ban an individual sportsman shouldn't you ban a barista / builder? What's the difference?
These are players not Oligarchs that stripped Russia and are in Putin's pocket.

What about all the other sportsmen from awful regimes? Haven't banned the Chinese yet!
Seems to me the French have a much more sensible approach, pretty much all of the UKs reaction is more to do with keeping Johnson in place than anything to do with Ukraine's welfare!

Does Johnson run Wimbledon? I sincerely hope not. I do not believe in mixing sport and politics and that is exactly what is happening. As I have said previously, sport has been trashed over the years and individuals abused because they have been pawns in a nationalistic propoganda machine. Many nations have been guilty but none more so than the Soviet bloc.
It is a difficult choice. Do we spend public money so that athletes can compete at world level, do we seek praise or glory for the success created or do we just let them get on with it with self funding and watch the opposition take the glory? It is a bit like top level soccer. Perhaps the winners take the glory at the expense of the suckers who pay exhorbitant prices, often well beyond their means, to shout from the terraces in the hope of sharing the spoils.

And now it seems we are no better than the Russians, penalising all sorts of individuals just because you hate their countries government seems a very dodgy road to go down & does not bode well for our futures, seems straight out of what we would have thought scary futuristic books that we would have hoped would never really happen, governments have I'm afraid lost their heads & sense of proportion!

You may not remember the days before widespread professional sport when everything was the for the glorication of ones own achievement, before it became a political tool and the whole scene turned dirty. Two things drove it this way, greed and nationalistic propoganda.

I think it's not just sport, we may think these rich Russians with their expensive houses & boats are prime targets but they bought them from people & companies who were very happy to take their money just like governments, it seems we're heading for a very dodgy future where Western governments seem to think grabbing these assets just because Putin runs Russia as being perfectly acceptable.
Not so long ago we would thank god we don't live in countries where these sorts of things happen!

Sad but not true. You have just positively identified yourself as a Russian troll.

Do you know which of either group are in putins pocket or not ? While the Chinese record on human rights is very poor I'm not sure anyone could compare it to ukraine, also you are old enough to remember south africa anyone playing cricket was banned.
This is about money not ethics, of course a lot of sanctions etc are just lip service.

No Russian troll, but suppose someone grabbed your property just because Blair had a rush of blood to the head, it's the principle that something an individual owns can be seized by governments because of a countries mad leader that I don't like!
Not so long ago farms were being stolen from farmers in Zimbabwe & we all thought that was disgusting, how things change when the boots on the other foot!!

Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) was once a prosperous country. The Wealth was in the hands of the Brits and was not initially equally distributed. When they decided to revert to tribalism the wealth vanished, was not equally distribute, what was left, and the country has reverted to a corrupt peasant state. Are the populace better off?

Brian is anti everything UK , but won't try the other side of the pond
Not anti everything UK, only this pratish governments stupidity, not sure which pond you have in mind but we have a place in Switzerland which is a really sensible country & if not there France would be my next choice, my ancestors have been Devon farmers for as far back as we can go but there is a bit of French blood in there somewhere.

can't see its anything to do with Boris but banning someone just because of their nationality is racism, can't see how it can be anything else

Without the Ukraine war & Boris's Churchill act he would have been chucked out by his party long ago as he should have been!

My view of Russia is that it is a huge country populated by scattered urban populations and sparsely populated areas. It is difficult to govern effectively, contains a large pecentage of inebriated halfwits and a large and devious population of crooks who are more than willing to exploit them. This is hardly the foundation for a world leading super power. No type or level of government has ever mastered or managed the situation successfully. Am I wrong?

Sounds pretty accurate, but then not so very long ago there were people saying pretty much similar things about parts of Ukraine when they were wanting to join the EU & NATO.
