In 1981 I was in Zimbabwe walking down a street in Harare (independence had only just happened) whistling the tune, blissfully unaware of its use in the Smith regime and I was very nearly mugged by a group of black Zimbabweans
The tune is wonderful, it is what it represents in terms of human repression and misery and the terrible people that have used it as an anthem in the past.
It certainly would not be my choice of anthem with that in mind.
The problem is most pieces of classical music can have some political connotation connected to them from something or other. If you end up taking all these into account you end up we some boring dirge. A bit like the euro note with a selection bland European architectural features on them.
