French to use neonics in sugar beet seed.

I know .
but who initiated it ?
It was put to a member vote in 2018 and needed a majority to enable the ban, sixteen countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, voted to ban, Romania, Denmark, and three other countries opposed the ban, and 13 countries abstained. Since then its been possible to obtain an "emergency" derogation and the individual countries can apply, its unlikely these will be allowed after this year. As the UK voted strongly to ban them, the use of the derogation is unlikely. Ultimately the members instigated the ban, the UK could have abstained or voted against but voted to ban them.

Thanks for a sensible answer .

It will mean the end of our sugar industry.
Sugar % is in the 15's at the opened UK factories. Yields are down too.
Can't see our government doing a u turn and allowing the return of neonics.
I don’t grow sugar so asking from a point of view of ignorance. Neonicotinoids were invented in the 1980s. What did the sugar industry use before?

I have had an e mail from British Sugar today saying return your contract by 5 pm Friday for next years crop or you are basically out. My beet looks terrible, 80% virus infection, not lifting any until next month so no idea on yield and sugar content. I have no intention of being bullied into signing, i want to see how this years crop performs. Is that so unreasonable? 🖕 British Sugar.

The stance taken by the UK government is the definition of 'take back control'.
Sadly too many people in our industry supported that policy.
Exactly what I was going to say, and now we are probably going to import sugar grown using chemistry we voted to get rid of because of environmental issues/reasons. Its astounding to say the least, talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Well Nick Morris did say it was a gentle reminder. I assumed it was a laugh! I asked my local fieldsman the response so far, but he was somewhat evasive. I know a few with one year contracts doing same as you, waiting a while to see how it looks and then take a view. Doubt most of them would really miss beet. Might actually make an odd soul finally decide to dump the old girlfriend. She has lost her attraction!

Brexit may bring about a different viewpoint. It cannot be blamed as usual on the EU for better or worse. Gang up on you local MP's and tell them you will run against them and split the vote. Gravy train killer which will get attention.
Secondly its not exactly a large product so get in a van and go and bring back French/Polish seed. I know the contracts but buy it and just return it later as unused, bet it disappears with nobody noticing. Computers count by 1's and zeros so are just fast idiots. You just need to outflank the system.

I do wonder about at times. But TFF is a broad church and the anonymity means I have no idea whether I am sat next to a pauper, a Lord or President Putin, but will say you provide entertainment with your posts.

Split the vote and fetch and grow Polish beet seed - you for real, like as my daughter would say, eyebrow cocked.
