And which use a spool to raise and lower and which use the linkage?

New style kuhn/jd can spread and work on spool. Think pottinger does both aswell.

Krone pull type spreads full width and works off the spool.

So am I right in thinking that you set the linkage height and then lock off the linkage if you want/need to?

Yes set linkage and use spool as the mower is a pull type

Yeah we generally dont as it's either getting kicked or its stemmy stuff anyway but unless its sticky it does no harm as long as rake isn't driving on same tracks.

Spread full width with trailed at minute so have to drive over it anyway. If the ground is too soft it can get pushed in where I'm turning but I try and not spread when it's like that.

Front Poettinger here, spreads pretty much full width & lifts with a single spool, had a Kuhn before & was the same.
You get a set of chain hangers that bolt on to the front linkage so the linkage is dropped to a set height rather than locked off, then you can lift it when needed like getting in/out of somewhere tight,that’s provided you don’t need the spool for something else.

Can get you a pic of the hangers if you want.

Front Poettinger here, spreads pretty much full width & lifts with a single spool, had a Kuhn before & was the same.

I never use the check chains on mine anynore. Have it set to linkage height on the screen, and the golden rule always lock off the front arms on the screen. Found this out the hard way last year after hitting the wrong spool and putting the front arms into float, BANG, broke the check chains and twisted and ripped the A frame.

Mower was fine thankfully. Lesson learned though

we went for a new pottinger last year after asking on here for recommendations. very easy to hook on and off along as its on a level surface, I'm not using an A frame or check chains , just lock out the hydraulics for the arms once I've set the correct height.

if i remember correctly Claas and pottinger we're the most recommended on here and FB

im using it in conjunction with a trailer JD1365

Good aren’t they! Yours must be the newer version that doesn’t require an A frame. Mine is the last year before they changed that

Mine stay in float with the chains all the time, can only lock them off outside & I need to lift them at least once a day, also have forgot to put linkage in single acting & broke a set of chains plus the hangers, mower stays on pretty much all season.
