Frustration that we cant buy a farm...

I'm confused how @gone up the hill got going with nothing if he never borrowed money, I would love to hear how!

Might be a good idea to read my post above again!! :)

When I started out things were a lot different than now, I agree about borrowing money to buy land, problem a lot of young/would be farmers have these days is getting a viable business started so they can then be able to have a decent set of accounts and be able to buy land/ a farm etc using borrowed money...

But how did you get the bank to lend you money when you had nothing?

A few reasons... one being money was a lot easier to borrow then ( if it was now then there wouldn't be any way of borrowing size a high figure ) and the fact what I offered them in return meant there was very little risk to the bank if I didn't pull off what I said I could do..

Did they not ask for a deposit or security of any kind then and you were able to just go and buy your farm from that?!

300-400 acre would do me fine on the basis that it may be able to be bought and paid for on what I earn.
And would still allow me to work offshore and be manageable for the wife.
Where Nova Scotia/new Brunswick then into I dunno Colorado type area.
Certainly not down in the heat

You need to consider the location carefully, do you have children to school, wife who works off farm ?? Colorado is very scenic but Wyoming / Dakota/Montana etc, could be less expensive...all depends what you want.

I have a young neighbor who works in the oil, the wages he earns are enabling him to purchase a farm, he works three weeks on and two off.

I thought Montana was very expensive because of movie stars buying ranches there?

Kids are 11 and 8. Wife would work on farm as required when I am away and we would work together when home.
Crap rotation three in two off.
What websites do you recommend as everything we have looked at before was mainly on websites that didn't seem that helpful.
Nothing seemed sensibly priced either.

If you want to do cattle I would think france would be good bet. A strong store (300 kg LW at 3 euros) will almost buy an acre here. Where else can you do that? Plus we still get suckler cow premium, plus a lot of other help you will not get any where else.

Why would anyone consider anywhere else?

Unless they wished to grow a lot of corn or milk lots of cows? Neither of which the OP (or anyone else on this thread, as far as i can see) wishes to do.

How do the french farmers like british farmers who move over there? I love the french countryside, houses etc but don't think i'd like the french people. I guess picking up the language would take a couple of years.
