Why not?

I get nothing for not using any pesticides or fertilizers. But the cost of clean up is born by the tax payer?
Why shouldn't I get some of the saving?

Slurry will gets Grants.
Those that loose housing and do not causing a problem get nothing.

Seems fair?

fair for every other industry is “poulter pays”

i guess we are “special” ?

This makes zero sense? If you cause pollution with fertilisers and pesticides because of bad practice you think you should be paid not to do bad practice? I am confused.

Great where do I get my lump sum to fit energy saving bulbs, switch to an electric car and stop buying consumer items from around the globe.
Just post the links please.

It makes all the sense in the world if the aim is to reduce pollution. Farmers use fertiliser (including muck), pesticides and cultivations for economic reasons. At the moment society pays for the clean up, largely. Not such a change to get society to help prevent it in the first place and encourage better practice on farm.

I would like clarification on how it all starts and where the baselines are calculated from.
In other words, am I best to continue in my usual soil damaging, piglet tail docking, nutrient polluting and no tree planting way for the time being until I’m bribed, sorry, incentivised to change, or can I start now without penalty.
Asking for a friend.

I don’t think we should be paid not to cause pollution....
We are not, there is no pollution anyway, as I said above, the water is checked on the river by my farm every 30 seconds.
But, the water companies are paid money by the govt to pass on to farmers for these very reasons.
The water companies in prefer to offer a token amount and keep the rest.

Under my proposals we wouldn’t be. We are paid a reward for clean water, not to stop dirty water.
Having said that, the farm to tap scheme is only available to arable farmers

Under 'your' proposals who would set the 'trigger' reference point for contaminants. Would there be a reduced payment/sliding scale for variable success. And would there be a penalty (so a negative financial payment) in event of failures resulting in exceedances.

See SevernTrent farm to tap. Been working for last few years well in our area (until they cut the rate)

register land, all land in wheat and rape eligible.
Water checked multiple times through season. Rate cut every time metaldehyde levels spike above set level. If it spikes above legal level then no payment. If it stays below set level then bonus at end of season.
All tested by water company.
No reason when they take the samples they can’t test for multiple chems and pay more.

scheme could also be tweaked to improve full range of crops.
Also, to an easy way for water companies to trace real culprits

You're likely better off making as much mess as you can right now, so that you can get paid to improve things in a couple of years, by going back to what you are doing now. Expect to have to write a few flowery reports as to the outcomes of the revolutionary new farming practices you will be reverting back to.

Oh, and you'd better get a few more farrowing crates in, ready to be incentivised to remove them. (y)

Expect all this to change three times; £500m new it system; goodness knows how many reports before then. It's a crime that the cost of implementation is such a high percentage of distribution.

No shock that it's so tricky to make long term plans.

Good plan. I’ve never used farrowing crates. Now thinking of getting some.
