FTTP on Demand

...I’ll hasten to add you also discover what sites on the net have good or poor connections and even there is a lot of traffic “hitting” a big site. Downloading 10’s of gigs in a few minutes gets quite nice and then every so often when things “elsewhere” go slow you’re like hey WTF (shock horror :yuck:)

It also highlights where other bottlenecks are e.g HDD or CPU speed. Some things aren’t as fast as I expected/hoped, like loading multiple tabs.

Today at work thread loads almost instantly now though!!

Telling you you’ll be upgrading stuff now....

Yup!

New PC was on the cards before but almost seemed silly to do before fibre arrived. I’d spent far longer download software etc on the old 3mb connection that was worth it.

If I’m honest I’m not sure I can see the huge benefit on the 300 package over 30. Luckily the 300 was on special offer for the same price when I ordered. If they wanted to jack the price at the end of the term I’m unsure whether I’d pay more....however 18mths time I may change my mind!

Slightly off topic. Cat5 between houses went off last night. Changed socket modules so thinking cable. Thinking short term fixed swop the pair so around. Can not find a ref to which pairs are spare. Thoughts ?

Oh dear bog roll cable breakdown :X3::cool:

Pairs 2 and 3 are typically (though not always) used for (non PoE) Ethernet over structured cabling.

That is green/green-white and orange/orange white pairs.

These are presented on pins 1/2 and 3/6 (or vice versa) depending on what wiring standard (568A or B) has been used, i.e the positions of the “green” pair and the “orange” pair are swapped on the RJ45 jack. Typically 568A is used in the UK by most installers. But not always. Best to check.

This means you have (theoretically) Pair 1 (blue/blue-white) and Pair 4 (brown/brown-white) as spare...

(note that in the main Ethernet hardware will always use pins 1/2 and 3/6 to communicate - for the main flavour of Ethernet anyway - electrically it’s not fussed about what the underlying wiring colours are)

Am I envious! of such fast speeds.
Speed test 6Mbs download, but no problems watching Netflix
But "Oh" so been ripped off, to get unlimited broadband my monthly cost has increased by 75% but the upgrade was necessary since builders were eating my 15Gb in no time at all and non capped charges last month went to £169 lucky me it should have had a cap, it wasn't in place and a full credit was applied.
FTTP is near by, like hung across the road 20 mtrs from the house, but at the costs indicated above, could I justify getting it to the House?

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Will try later and see what happens.
Local lad with a cable tester called in. 1st attempt got an error, 2nd attemp tested fine. Half an hour later off again.
Looks like 100m cat 6 & a pair of big pair of gloves on the shopping list
Meanwhile managing to get a wifi signal from other house - just

I'm on Gigaclears 300 package, if you have a 4k TV, the 30 package won't keep up.

As you've found the bottlenecks are now at the other end of the line.

Should be full speed instantly, not like BT broadband.

If the Internet slows down its usually an issue elsewhere.

Just done a speed test for you, my download is usually always in the 270-295 range and upload just over 300. Your jitter does look very high.

Wow, thanks. Handy to know.

Speed is masses for what I need, but still not running full speed by any respect.....nor it is quite as consistent. Speed test on my mobile just showed up as 175 download, 136 upload.

No 4k tv currently but may well by the time the 18mths is up.

One thing I don't like so far is I can't see the router connection speed currently. I might have to ethernet connect to the Genexis router....and see if I can pull up its dashboard and see if there is a connection speed noted like on a standard router. The Linksys Velop won't allow me to connect to the Genexis through it and the Velop shows nothing about speed at all just "Internet" with a tick next to it.

You should be able to connect to your Genexis over your network. What IP address is it dishing out to your Velop box?

Overhead BT Openreach FTTP?

If there is a a CBT like this on your nearest serving pole then it will be a very cheap and quick install...

Even if there is not the nearest splitter might be closer than you think. It’s only mega costs if they have a ton of fibre to lay or string up.
