FTTP on Demand

Sorry folks, I’m in “fibre all the way” mode on this thread, so apologies for any confusion caused.

As posted by @upnortheast the performance of FTTC solutions (ADSL2 and G.fast etc) tails off the further you are from the cabinet.

In the case of the later, faster technologies like G.fast which promise some amazing download speeds, you practically must be next door to the cabinet to get anywhere near the speeds advertised.

Otherwise the copper based speeds tail off very sharply indeed. Which is why I hate copper connections - they inevitablely over promise and under deliver.

If you're in the sticks like us, they just suck.

Just having a new phone line put in over the next week or so. Friendly telephone engineer suggests no further capacity up our road so new connections will have to be fttc which for some unknown reason openreach won’t connect our current line to. Will port the old number to the new line and cancel it.

Very early doors, as far as timescale goes, with fibre orders. You need oodles of patience with On Demand Fibre it would seem. Not many words coming from Cerberus (or Openreach for that matter)....

However a cursory check of the customer portal tonight reveals an "expected date" has mysteriously appeared; 18 December 2018.

Shall we have bets to see if they make it all happen by then? Just for a larf :ROFLMAO:
Just had an update from Cerberus this morning with dates from Openreach...

"Openreach last updated that the work estimates have now been raised. Overheads estimates has an RBD (required by date) 05/11, underground has an RBD 29/11."

So looks like there's going to be so busy linesman (and linesladies) over the next fortnight if they're going to hit those dates for the overheads.

Which year is that for?!

This weeks update:

"Openreach advised that they have an Over-head estimate and underground cabling and Jointing estimate on this order. Both allocators have been chased for an update-The overhead estimate is currently awaiting a survey to be completed- 1 CABLE OVER 15 SPANS BETWEEN 16 POLES. The underground allocator has replied to advise that the earliest he can start TRRT would be 07/11/2018."

Nothing like a bit of in-explicable Openreach jargon to keep the customers on their toes. I had to google what "TRRT" meant :whistle:

Last week we were hearing reports of a man in a white van behaving suspiciosly in the area. On approaching him he claimed to be an openreach surveyor planning a FTTP scheme for our road.
A hoax or progress at last. - Time will tell
Email today from the lady coodinating things for the 29 properties down our road, - Openreach have been unable to resolve issues with Wayleaves so are unable to proceed.
Which is strange as there are poles to every property already in place.
Had enough of Openreach promises
Time to look at solutions from local Air Nexus provider. I think. We just happen to have a shed roof idealy placed to bounce a signal from their local repeater "round the corner" to a hamlet up the road

Fibre appeared up the main road a few months ago and now OR are planning to duct it 140m up the side of the farm drive to a 'joint box' which will be no more than 15m from the office. Can we be reasonably hopeful of getting a FTTP connection in the near future or is the horror story only just beginning? I can't help but feel like one of the lucky ones at this moment.

Sounds pretty positive. I'd put in for a quote once, they've finished the cabling works.

Openreach don’t believe in “near future”.

But you might have a chance of it by 2020!

Thanks @Pheasant Surprise. Am I right in thinking we should be able to order FTTP from a 'retail' supplier once it's done (who then get OR to do the work) or do we need to push OR directly? I'm not holding my breath @Steevo!
Yep if it’s “On Demand” FTTP then Cerberus and FluidOne tend to be the ISPs who most folks go with.

You have no contractual relationship with OR only the ISP you order the service through. The ISP gets OR to complete the work on their behalf. OR are their supplier effectively.

After 12 months an On Demand FTTP service is re-graded as “native” FTTP - which means 2 things: firstly your plan prices reduce (substantively) and secondly you now have a much wider range of other ISPs that can offer you an FTTP broadband package as your service is now ‘native’ FTTP.

So, how do we stand being 2½ miles from the exchange?
We used to be able to get about 2.8, but since they've been messing with the lines and fitting fibre elsewhere .... we are down to about half of that!!!
Bad egg to reply to your own post but today Airband have been an installed their kit for me ...
We've gone from ...
07.30 - no internet again as the connection died overnight again
08.00 - 2 Mbps
13.00 - 22 Mbps

So far, so good

So is that when they find the duct is blocked & it will take 3 months to get a crew in to sort it ? :(

Update received on Friday last week:

“Underground cabling & jointing in issue with Openreach cabling team. This is now fully Rodded and Roped and ready for Cabling, OH allocator has been chased to make sure work is in hand to replace Decayed pole and Tree cutting.as per survey results”

So yeah 2020 here we come :ROFLMAO:

Just looked at fibre and although exchange has it it’s not available to us as everyone around here has a connected to exchange line. [emoji35]

Nearest cabinet is about 1/2 mile away but lines come in from opposite direction.

Well here in Wales we were promised fast Broadband for everyone in 2011, in 2013 we were promised in writing by the then minister Edwina Hart that we would be connected to fibre by 2016.

Recent communication with the new Minister, Julie James, tells us that we will not be in the successor program for fibre (so are unlikely to see any improvement for at least 5 years - if ever). This led to us starting to raise pubplicity on the matter which led to a BBC news article over the last weekend which was trending as high as the 8th most read article in the whole of the uk

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-46468398

The Government claims to have provided access to basic broadband (2Mbps) for all for those who do not currently have coverage otherwise according to the departtment for digital, media, culture and sport. Which is clearly a lie here in rural Wales and I suspect elsewhere.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/broadband-delivery-uk

To try and bring pressure to bear in wales I have set up a Facbook group to bring all those together in Wales suffering from poor broadband

https://www.facebook.com/groups/312721569572553/

As there is no light at the end of the tunnel for us I have been expeimenting with 4G and can just get a signal unlike my neighbours. So I am currently fitting an external aerial (which I hope to finish today) which will feed a 4G router. I can get just 3 Mobile and EE here; however, the former sometimes has offers for unlimited data sims for £20 a month which means that if it works ok (I'm hoping for better than 20Mb/s download) I can ditch landline broadband and save £8 a month from my landline rental - so the Broadband will in effect cost £12 a month.

Edit: I've just finished the installation with a Poynting aerial and am getting 81Mb/s down and 23 Mb/s up on a my 4G connection. I'm very impressed as we thought we had no chance of fast internet here.
