My brother has been hedgecutting for the last few weeks with our trusty newholland 6640, well yesterday she came to a spluttering stop, luckerly for him it wasnt on the public hyway, but halfway across one of our cattle grazing fields, atleast for half the day the cattle had a new toy to amuse them selves with? Anyway he did admit to me that the fuel guage light bars were barely showing 2 and flickering and he had chanced his luck thinking he could just finish the one hedge? lesson learnt. It got me thinking does this happen to other people very often? Our fuel tanks are now plastic fuel stations with filtered fuel delivery for the last 10years, do many still use the steel fuel tanks up on blocks gravity feed, like i used to do when i started many years ago? comments please

Just switched my trusty old steel tank up on wibbly wobbly sleepers ( one looked like it had woodworm.....good, more breeding stock ) for a plastic bunded one. Couldn't believe how clean the diesel was at the bottom of the old tank. Thought it would be full of crap and water, and would need to be dumped.
IME, 40 series fuel gauges are about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Can't even dip them with a stick cos there's 2 tanks.:banghead:
My dad, who's been driving tractors for nearly 70 years seems to have got by with never, ever refueling a tractor in his life:scratchhead:. He runs out of fuel on a regular basis.....

We have an old metal tank. Put a filter on it for the first time last year, chucked some marine 16 in it (bug killer) and stirred it up by pumping the diesel back in the top. I was amazed that absolutely nothing came came out the tank into the filter.
