I was thinking this yesterday, would a fan off a grain spear work, with say some flexible pipe, like off a seed drill fan?? Venting outside of course.

I’ve got one. But as soon as you take it off you are exposed to the fumes. Or anyone else entering the workshop is as well.
HSE don’t like that and want full fume extraction.
Are they any good, had a look at them after our HSE visit, heard cheap ones are load of junk, need to start looking at over £1000, apparently. But as you say, as soon as remove, which you’re going to, the fumes are there.

Mines a Speedglas Adflo unit. Love it, brought on eBay from a retiring welder. Think some of the cheaper ones are good, IIRC Jackson rings a bell? Also got a standard mask though, as it saves putting on everything for small jobs.

I know there are lots about, but what do you look for?

Larger volume and a good capture distance otherwise you have to make sure you have the nozzle in the right place all the time

We have an extractor that fits to the TIG torch, sucking from between the arc and your hand. Really effective and works well outside as required by HSE but makes the torch a bit bulky in tight spaces. Turns on automatically as you strike the arc. Got it from Mig Anglia, very helpful company.

Use disposable respirator mask. Won’t cost £20, good for a month and throw away so no assessment or servicing requirement like an expensive airfed mask. Available for others working in the same area if you have a few on the shelf.

Not cool or flash but effective, cheap and simple.

What type of disposable mask is ok for welding fumes?

Been researching this over a few days and 3m do do one (I think) but as their advice line guy is off sick I cannot get confirmation. As we have an hse check soon I’ve had to bypass this line of enquiry.

Just spoke to a really helpful guy at afs supplies (sell ppe and stuff as well as disinfectants etc for the pig and poultry industry) who suggested a half face mask and replaceable filters for fine dust and welding fumes. About 30 squids delivered, the mask lasts 5 years and the filters one month with no assessments or servicing required. New filters about 15 quid. Whether it fits under a welding mask is debatable because of different welding mask designs but they have customers that are happy and some not so I took a gamble and will be up to spec for our inspection.
Don’t forget these fancy belt mounted ones should have a daily inspection, not sure if this should be recorded or not.

I’m happy with the idea because it covers various situations and to be fair whether we use it when welding or not........ I’ll stop there.

I Recommend afs supplies to TFF members for their help and advice to me when not many others would risk telling me what’s required.

HSE issues safety alert on welding fume

New evidence shows exposure to mild steel welding fume can cause cancer. Employers should use suitable controls for all welding work. The current guidance on mild steel welding is out of date and will be updated as soon as possible to take account of this new evidence.

From the HSE web page.............................................................................................................

Do you have a link for the face mask they suggested? Don't do much welding, but it would be good to be legal.....and safe.

Try and take a look tomorrow but as I said in the post: afs supplies were very helpful on the phone. 3M were quite frankly Fcking useless and no help at all.

Our H&S inspector was happy with the half mask and filters although did question whether it would comfortably fit under a welding mask. Our response was if that was an issue we’d go back to the old manual shield!

Cheers for that. Keep meupdayed on your progress and I will try from this end.
I can understand if you are a regular welder, but somehow, once or twice a month welding outside, it does seem a bit extreme. The way things are going we will either die of Corona Virus or drowning when the world floods anyway!!
