Fungicide on first spray

Does everyone put a fungicide in with the weed spray on spring barley, we never used to and still got good crops Agronomist thinks we should, not that it has any disease just thinking I could save the £8-£9 a acre!!
Just wondering what others do??

You could give it some protection.for a lot less than that

What’s being recommended ? And by who ?

Worthwhile or not depends on weather between now and harvest so a crystal ball question really

Lots of barley grown around here, so mine has had 0.4 Siltra costing around £19/ha or £8/acre. Whether or not it will give a margin over input cost this year is debatable. It usually does in wetter years.

The T2 spray timing at awns visible to ears emerged will give you the best return on investment.

We split it. Normally a 10 days to 2 weeks after weed spray.
We do the same, putting 0.4l kestrel and 1l CTL for first fungicide application.

By splitting it, i feel it gives a better indication of how lush crops going to be so pgr can be added at same time as fungicide. Also give it more trace elements, putting on manganese and magnesium sulphate at each pass 2l/ha.

Will give it another fungicide when awns out.

I used to do combined t1 and fungicide, something like 0.4 siltra or 3/4lt fandango but now i go through earlier with herb and manganese which
I think is better,I found it could be a job to get right into the bottom of very thick lush crops to get a good kill.

This year the bulk of my spring barley hasn't had a fungicide t1 just nutrients, t2 is planned as normal. One piece which has had a fungicide got some in with the oat spray at flag leaf emerging stage. I may go through again and drift a little something on to the ear, I'll wait and see.

Went through with some mang the other week but no weeds to target really.
A few poking through now so will a fung and herb next week somewhen.

Usually only ever go through twice with the sprayer and twice with the spinner. #bliss

You do the herbicide and fungicide just as the crop covers in. The fungicide will stay in the crop 3 weeks after which the crop will have magically jumped up and be near enough at awns emerging anyway.

No point messing about with spring barley, grow it cheap and simple.
Grow it cheap and simple you say, and then there you are criticizing me for having the option of omitting the t1 and saving 8 quid an acre!

In a previous post you say why bother saving 8 quid well even on a modest 50 acres that £400 which may not be much to the likes of you but I'll take that saving any day of the week.

Fudge that, why would you split them and run through the crop twice??

The barley will go through its growth stages so fast its pointless.

Save 8 quid an acre whatever next.

I do both, one bit i split it and at home and other farmers i spray for do both together.

I think to encourage it to tiller it needs to be hit earlier. So just combine weed spray with that if all germinated.

Kind of regretting it now. Weathers turned wet and struggling to get fungicide on.

If you dont want to put fungicide on thats your game its no skin of my nose. I just dont see the point of not doing it. You are going through with herbicide and its not like you need to go mad with what is applied.

The trouble with the dont spray anything-its not worth it approach is you can soon get to a point where establishing the crop is pointless.

Many people may well have spent £80 quid an acre before the crop is up in row but the cost of one fungicide is too much??

Or is this just another case of: an 'independant' agronomist told me so it must be right???

Fair old bit of tune changing this season. Same folks who cant read labels properly probably.

It's definitely worth it. Every acre I grow is pushed to the max and if something out of a can is needed I'll be the first to reach for it and ladle it on. I'm hoping for 3 ton acre or very close to it so I'm definitely NOT one of those People who say it's not worth it. I just can't see the point in putting something in because I'm going through when there is no disease, it's just a waste. my barley will get a t2 and probably a very good one to keep it going as long as possible.

I guess your attitude to"going through so chuck it in" stems from when you were a serviced agro and could have a draw on all the little "chuck it in's".

Nothing is definite.

Very true. What I should have said is at the moment it's definitely worth it. A dry June and it'll be a different story and I'll be even more glad i haven't wasted a fungicide.

Look up your NIAB TAG responses to fungicides in spring barley. They aren't great but being open to reacting to a change is key. There's a lot more barley around now that the wheat barons of East Anglia have largely given up on growing blackgrass with a second wheat companion crop.

From memory I think 2x ctl was the best margin on spring barley so that tells you s lot.
I've got plenty of sprayer capacity and a modest acreage so I can react to change at the drop of a hat.
