Furlough extended

If if I heard correctly from August the Employer will have to burden the 80% with the government, the devil we be in the detail as the chancellor didn't say how much the government will be contributing just that the employee will get 80% if the employer wants to still leave them on the scheme

Country is doomed. They will be addicted to it now.

It is exactly like the SFP. Based on what you were doing at one point in history. So if you lost your job 1 week before Covid you get basic unemployment allowance. If you still had your job you will be £20k better off by October.
And thats just a bog cleaner salary is it?

I’m sensing quite a bit of unfairness is being felt in the working population and members on here which has created by this new announcement.

Even more difficult that many of those furloughed (e.g airlines) are likely to be unemployed when furlough ends.

Furlough probably no more expensive than paying out unemployment benefits much ?

Probably not the most reliable source but it was the first thing Google threw up. The scheme of administering it probably adds quite a bit more on top of the direct money though.

How much is the unemployment benefit and how are payments made?
There’s a maximum amount you can get - but how much you’re entitled to depends on things like your age, income and savings.

Use a benefits calculator to check how much JSA you can get, and how your other benefits will be affected.

Those up to 24-years-old get a maximum of £57.90; 25 or over get up to £73.10; and couples (both aged over 18) get up to £114.85.

Payments are usually made every 2 weeks.

All benefits, pensions and allowances are usually paid into your bank, building society or credit union account.

Exactly, the money ends up in the economy anyway, it's not like people are shoving their salary under a mattress.

This too. They are taxed on furlough money, plus then VAT soon as they spend it on goods or services so the headline figure they "earn" is probably quite a bit different from that which they actually get to keep hold of.

I do feel for any who are furloughed that used to earn over £2500 - must be difficult when your lifestyle is set up for a higher paid job to then have a ceiling imposed.

It’s a chicken and egg situation. The government want to protect people’s wellfair until the economy returns. But the economy won’t return as long as employers have the option not to start up business and get their employees paid straight from the government.

In theory the economy will return quicker if those furloughed are paid and thus able to spend it.

If you worked in the airline industry but are now furloughed you'll be out and about spending more money in the economy to keep other businesses ticking over. Many shops are shut because turnover isn't there to justify it due to the lockdown.....so the furloughed employees using their money in such shops will boost the economy rather than shrink it.

Come off it. The country is not doomed.

If the place, the people and the infrastructure had all be bombed flat/worn into the ground I would be more inclined to agree with you. The government is going to stop this scheme eventually, what will they do then? Sit and home with no pay?
