Furrow press changes

I my experience by the time you get it all apart half the rings are scrap as they will crack with the heat/hammering etc and general punishment, at this point you are then committed to carry on as so much time has been wasted getting it apart so new rings it is,,,at lots of dollars each I,m guessing at 60-70 per ring all adds up. So as I suggested earlier in thread sell it to someone it suits and buy another. If you weren’t so far away I could have sold you one cheers

I can’t see heating rings helps as the heat only expands things and the rim and spokes will stop the centre expanding outwards so it will expand towards the axle tightening things and making it worse
Nick...
the fire seems to dry out the hard packed earth and turn it to dust which comes out easier and leaves you with that little bit of slack ( ooh missus ) to get the rings off.

Well just a bit of an update.

Not wanting to walk away from it......

The original Farmforce press @Alistair Nelson was 67” and I wanted to increase it to 100” to match the new (to us) plough.

Luckily, I had a section of press with 7 rings on it. Both the rings & the steel used in its frame were the exact same dimensions as our 67” press.

So I chopped the frame and stitched in sections to bring it to the required width.
Now the hard bit....

I chopped the rings into individual sections with a gas axe. Then brought them to an engineer who pressed out the pieces of axle with a 60tn press, he said the press had to work hard!
Then got two lengths of 50mm shaft (EN24T) and the engineer reduced the ends to 40mm just as Farmforce had originally done.
New bearings in the ends.
Then I added in central bearings to support the shafts in the middle.

All I need to do now is to get it shot blasted. Then I’ll spray it and add new cleaning chains.

Top job all most identical to how they were done originally only difference one that size would have had 4 axles and 8 bearing as it removes the alignment issues of 3 bearings on one shaft so just keep an eye on that. Otherwise spot on.

Thanks for the qualified advice Alistair!

I thought of the alignment issue that you describe. To try and overcome any issues, I positioned the central bearings with the frame upside down with just the axles (No rings on them) fixed in the end bearings so that I knew the axles were running perfectly straight. Hopefully they’ll stay that way!
