Furrow press changes

Hi all

Not sure if this should be in the workshop section or not.
This press matches our 4 furrow plough and we’re thinking of moving to 5 furrows.

I have spare rings which would give us enough width for 5 furrows.
My only concern is getting the rings off the old shaft as I fear they are seized.

Any suggestions as to if and how they can be removed. I don’t mind sacrificing the shafts.

Lift it up the air ,jam a lump of wood into the end ring and try spinning the others ,if the first one spins on the shaft slide the wood through the next ring until you do the whole shaft, soon find out how many are seized ,,maybe non as they aren't a tight fit on the shaft

Tried this in the past.i managed by removing axle with rings on and hanging vertically and pressure washing between rings and then starting at the bottom fireing water between ring and axle and managed to get 10ft of rings of shaft and could reuse both and no damage done.was not a fast process though

I seem to remember an article in an old Profi magazine about doing just what your after. If I recall they started off by dropping it in a lake... I kid you not! Can’t remember the rest of the process unfortunately :X3:

From memory the first time we split our press up we had it strapped to a shed stanion and then pulled it with the loader. Gas heating the ring centres. Swearing lots and hitting with hammer.

We might have had it slung from the forks of the yard forklift. Forks pushed in holding ring and hit shaft downwards. Can't remember which worked best it was a long time ago.

I can’t see heating rings helps as the heat only expands things and the rim and spokes will stop the centre expanding outwards so it will expand towards the axle tightening things and making it worse
