Furrow width

whats a good alround furrow width plough is currently at 20” far to wide just looking for abit of advice my ploughing all self taught an its quite a long job to close it up abit an really dont wanna have to do it to many times lol (its not vari width) kuhn 7f multi leader

My kv is manual vari width. It came set to 16 inch and I'll not be altering it.
Does it make a good job at 16inchs? Mine was at 14inch when it first cane an we thought put out to 20 see how it goes can fairly get accross the ground but just not the best of finish at times

My kuhn came on 16 inches and I shut it up to 14.my previous kuhn woukd not work at 16 having a tendency to bulldoze rather than turn the soil.im sure it varies for differant solid though

Have a vari width and a 16" solid plough. The vari runs at 16 and only opens out if there's a bit of a curve or link on the furrow I want to straighten. Any wider and I find it's more akin to bulldozing then ploughing. You want the no. 28's for wider furrow widths.

Thats what mine does epecisally in lighter soil just trying to get mine to turn it over instead of pushing the soil about

Narrow in your plough and you'll be flying it (y). For me there's nothing more satisfying then looking at a well ploughed field and having the furrow press following me if it's not so well ploughed and next to a road .

For really smart work you can’t beat 10/11/12inch work which is fine on 10 inch tyres but not much good with 650/710 tyres that are common these days
Nick...
Surely maximum tyre width depends on the size of the bodies making the furrow, not the width the plough is set at...

- i.e. it doesn't matter if my manual variwidth Lemken on BS40 bodies is set at 12", 14", 16" or 18", a 710 XeoBib fits in a furrow made by a BS40 body (just) regardless of the width setting.

Of cource it does. Would't matter if the plough was set at 6" or 16" furrow width, the body still leaves the same size whole for the wheels to run in.

As general rule of thumb, the furrow width wants to be 2/3rd of the depth. So at 10" deep you want to be running 16" furrow width. That means a 20" furrow width wants to be ploughing over 13" deep to go any sense.

Thats quite helpful i have just spent few hours adjusting mine to 16” an i tend to plough at 10”

There's a Welsh proverb, makes sense when corn was sowed on the furrows and then harrowed to cover. " Amal ei gwys, amal ei ysgub." Roughly translated, "The more numerous his furrows, the more numerous his sheaves. "
So with the advent of the seed drill, the need for small narrow furrows disappeared, so today ,if the ground flips over at 20" get on with it!
