Galvanising building frames

Paint is simply not comparable with Galvanizing if you want maintenance free, long life protection.

The real difference is that the process of dipping steel( after pickling in hydrochloric acid to clean) in zinc causes a chemical reaction that alloys the zinc to the steel so it will not peal off in later years, unlike paint which is porous and therefore is undermined from underneath, pushing the paint from the steel!
Galvanizing prices are higher currently as zinc is a traded commodity and therefore the price is driven by the traded prices for that metal.
If it helps, as a guide structural steel prices( ex works) are around £260 per tonne all in.

If you are specifying paint, remember its all about the preparation of the steel prior to painting. Blast cleaning to SA2.5 "after fabrication" ensures the best adhesion for the primer coat, which should be minimum 75 microns DFT

I have a building erected in the 1960s that was a livestock building where the base of the stansions have corrosion through the H upright now a grain store / machinery shed

I would always galvanise the building even as a tenant the cost is relatively small and you could be using the building in 50 years time painting it will not protect it like galvanise

Are most sheds built with British steel?
Or Chinese
Does it make a difference to the price?
british here (at the moment) ring around find the lowest price get what your given, as long as it has the relevant test certs (y) big bundles can still be had for 440 per ton of questionable manufacture but would not use these as no comeback on a stockholder so it does make a difference

Going back to the old chestnut of CE marking. steel used by CE marked building producers must be traceable and to standard so test certs are a given.
Regards Chinese steel vs. British, it is all about the chemistry of the steel and the certification that goes with it. Low price does not always infer poor quality as stockholders are always looking to move slow moving stock and will often discount to do so...this doesn't mean its poor quality.

Current general section prices are around £550pt delivered so if you can buy around that price you are doing ok....less would be great, but ensure it comes with test certificates!
