Prolonged lockdowns, food rationing, it’ll all be over by Easter.....all sounding like deja vu.....personally I am going to create a vegetable patch as a priority this week. Funny how ones focus can change.
Have you got some seed?
Likes of MVF had very limited stock when I was in there 10 days ago.
We ordered online from a supplier who was aiming to keep trading as they supplied market gardens etc.

Makes me smile when folk start to try and 'feed themselves' by planting peppers, melons, asparagus etc. How many hot meals does that make? The easiest veg to grow, and which will make a meal in itself, is potatoes, and they can be grown in tubs if nec. We maximise the area of spuds and then look to fill in with beans, peas, cabbage, squash etc.

Heard on tv this morning that th horticultural industry is facing a massive financial disaster as they have grown all the spring plants and are unable to sell them.
Hmm... B & Q are still open, as are other DIY shops. They sell gardening stuff, so it seems unreasonable that garden centres shouldn't be allowed to open - provided that they keep social distancing rules.

I can believe that ,,all the garden centres closed ,,the stocks of seed spuds going to waste ,,bedding plants ,,our local place is huge and had only just had a big delivery from Holland

Think they come under essential shops ,,hardware stores need to stay open for home repairs .

I must say that recently I have discovered I am enjoying the whole 'composting' thing a bit too much. Now I know I was complaining about the scale of my wife's enthusiasm for this but I must say it is rather handy having somewhere to dispose of garden waste at all times. I can of course burn the wood in the incinerator or add it to the bug hotel but with our composting bins in full swing it is great to see how fast stuff will break down. With some carpet layers on top of the heaps the heat that builds up is incredible and almost anything is consumed tout-suite. Well recommended. Hobby has now extended to a compost sieve that one fits over a wheel barrow with the remaining detritus either recomposted or taken to the green waste bin at the recycling centre.

If gardening centres are closed (my volunteer delivery man tells me they are not here) then surely there should be some concerted effort to have them re-opened. I sent a lengthy list of info to my son (urban living) yesterday telling him how he could begin to prouduce food within a few days (sprouting); quite a bit in two to three weeks and a heap within two months. If he cannot buy plants or seeds he needs to go to the supermarket frequently and try to buy small amounts of inferior produce. This increases the risk of him contracting the virus and infecting his medical doctor wife.

Subsequent to posting the above, I have emailed the Garden Centre Association asking what they are doing towards having GCs opened. The source of food production is an essential service.

On their website was an item to the effect they are asking government for a hand out. I have told them that such whining is not the answer. They will not like it, but that is the wrong attitude. Very reminiscent of a TFFer who is always moaning about subsidies not being high enough.

You can help by doing something similar. Very slightly before my time, but it should be renewed "Dig for Victory".
Any suggestions for who else I can email?
