I have an old Gardner engine which needs a water pump bearing. The housing is alloy and will need warming to accept the bearing. Question is how hot dare I heat it...am thinking indirect heat from gas torch but any suggestions will be very helpful. TIA.

I'd over clean the land on the housing that the bearing sits into, with emery paper. Consider leaving the housing in boiling water before assembly. Keep it boiling until the housing stops getting warm. The gland that keeps the water in, is ok then? That was Lucky ........

Edit:
Space heater will also do the job of the water, if you have one.

Unfortunately Gardner are not much help in this case, although very explicit in some jobs, the water pump is is described as needing special tools and recommend that the pump is returned to a service agent or the works for attention or repair, same wording for the LX range as well.
You could try searching 'garder diesel engines' on Facebook some kind people on there might be able to help.
