Gate catches?

For those who use timber gates, what do you use for catches? Most seem to be designed to rip an animals flank open!

The best ones that work for me are the ones in the photo, except for the stupidly short screw. So I cut the screw portion off and weld on a bolt, then drill through the timber. Yeah, I could use steel gates, but I don't!

So what's the answer?

I use these for all sorts of gates. Similar to yours but a long chain that can be stapled to post and simply put around head of the gate (steel or wooden) or stapled/ bolted to wooden gate and receiving staple to post.

Yes, I have a couple of those but the decent ones are not cheap if you've a lot of gates.

Found this idea on Google. Easy enough to make up with a screw on gate hook and a ring (piece of hay tedder tine?).

Chain and padlock. Staple the chain on so it doesn't drop into the nettles and a cheap combination padlock.

It already has several knots/joins in the middle

Those NZ gate hooks are the business. Much stronger and easier to do one handed than the other type in my experience.

You can get double leg strikers which are safer for stock than a single leg.

With the safety chain in your photo, I will fix the hook to the post and have the eye fixed to the gate. But only use them for horses, as any kind of auto catch protruding is a big no no with many horsey types.

Even better, train a hot air gun on the end till it melts alittle.
For those in Yorkshire, put it close to the fire or if you have lit match this will do the same

These sort of catches don’t support the gate though. You want something to hold the clapping side solid so that when some prat climbs the gate the wrong end or the bull puts his head over it doesn’t bend the hinges
