Going to make some 16 foot gates for dividing pens any suggestions on size on steel and how to join them in middle without putting a centre pole into the ground. Also whats best way to do the hinges.
16ft gates will flex a fair bit unless made with heavy steel which in turn will obviously make them very heavy so any hinges or catches will have to be up to the job
I've made quite a few cattle gates recently up to 20ft. Even for smaller gates I pretty much always use 50x50x3 box as its strong, doesn't cost a lot more can take more of an impact. It does make gates heavy so there's a few things I do to avoid issues. Firstly weld plates onto the gate where the eyes are bolted to stiffen them and avoid local buckling under the load. Secondly for the crooks I use 19mm ones with a gusset underneath an backing plates to strengthen them. Also an R pin through to stop them lifting off (but they are heavy). I also like to make my gates deep to bluff the animals and stop them jumping. This does mean more bars and so a way to avoid excess steel is to run a 25x25x3 section between the larger ones to stop them sticking their heads through. My only other advice would be get them galvanised as its so cheap compared to the effort of making more in 15 years time.
Have 18ft pen division`s here made from 60mm blue band galv pipe . There one piece gates flex a little but no issues . Have 23ft pen division`s made from 76mm x 3,2mm pipe bolted to the shed pillars at each end no central supports to the ground . Flex but no issue`s . There`s 16 30 month bullocks in these pens .
