Gates on telegraph poles

Had a new pole sited in the yard a couple months which as it happens is a great to place to hang a gate off!

Is it a case of JFDI or have people been told off in the past for doing it?

Serious question: why did you allow a pole in your yard??

The old pole that was there has been replaced by this pole so the "pole" has always been there. But I'm changing the layout of the yard over the summer and this pole has the potential to be useful rather than just standing there.

I personally wouldn't hesitate to do it, but I wouldn't be drilling into the pole. The above idea with the band clamps is the way to go, that way if some jumped-up, hi-vis wearing clipboard warrior gets their undies in a twist, you can remove it.

Pity the pole is now there because you might have had an argument for them to put in a gate post for you when they had their equipment on site to do the job. I am pretty sure there will be some Act of Parliament or other on the books to stop you even thinking about doing something to the pole now!

It's no bother really as I've got others put in over the next month or so anyway. But if I could have saved a job I would! But as @grainboy pointed it's not mine and it was that murky grey area I wanted clarifying with collective

About 25 years ago, I put a kestrel nesting box on a very tall 1100 volt power line pole, which also had a stay wire. Some years later, a neighbour who was drilling for us got too close to the stay with his power harrow and the wire wrapped around the end rotor, it bent the pole over in quite a curve. The leccy lads came out, released the tractor and replaced the stay. Nothing was said about the nest box. It's probably still their now.
