Gator versus quad

@neilo , I think your problem is the people not the Gator. If they had any savvy, knew the capabilities of the machine and driven along the adjacent slope you'd never have known they were there, they wouldn't have to walk next time and the factor wouldn't get his ear bent. That is not to dismiss the fact they disobeyed a request, just a sideways look at a solution. My father-in-law was frequently dropped off by Gator on shoots when his knees got too far gone to tramp about the shoot and the shoot was one of the last passions. This was done with the permission of the 'keeper who is often the point of contact for the guns with the estate especially on let days. If travel by Gator was forbidden he would never have known and taken the 'keeper at his word.

The adjacent slope is the protected earthwork built by Offah, thought to be in the 780's. ;)

As for carrying people about that are unable to walk, it's really not down to me to facilitate that.

@neilo when I was healthy I didn't really consider the physical needs of many other folk, nor did I really think anyone should carry on trying to do things when they were becoming physically less able. Basically I thought you should gracefully surrender to old age. Now I have a slow burner cancer at 54 that robs me of my stamina I rather hypocritically have other views on the subject of keeping folk involved in what they enjoy. Hopefully I have time to make amends.
I'd be lost without my Gator, it carries fencing tools alongside the tractor, is an outdoor table and work bench, fetches firewood back in reasonable amounts, it's a fun thing for my nieces to 'drive' around a large field, carts leaves off my lawns, if my wife drives I can chuck a ewe or lamb on the back without a trailer and get them inside whereas my wife hated solo driving our quad and could scarcely turn it two up.
They are divisive, if your work loads suits it (and you can afford it) you'll love a Gator or Mule type thing. If you need speed and nimbleness then you need a quad.

I had the hunt around on new years day and if it wasn't enough for the horses to go galloping across the sodden stubble, two 4×4 thought it ok to go a across until they got stuck 3 fields away from the gate. Then a tractor had to go and retrieve them. I don't go on these heavy fields between autumn and spring as we DD.😡
Eh? I thought DD made your fields lovely and dry as well as making you more attractive to women?

I don’t disagree (& sorry to hear about the C:( ), but it’s not down to me to provide facilities for those less able to get across my ground.

Personally, I don’t mind being out in the weather on a quad occasionally, but have a system that doesn’t entail it being necessary all day, every day.

If I did, I fail to see what Gator type things offer over a Jimny on proper wheels, which will last a lot longer and cost less to maintain. :scratchhead: Not that I can afford or justify either.

what kind of money are these jimnys and can you get them fit up for lpg, as petrol would be out of the question really here. Bad enough running to the garage miles away to feed a quad never mind something twice the size.

We paid £7800 for a 2009 spotless jimny that had done 38,000 miles and it cost just about £4500 to get it converted into a pickup with a 3 inch lift kit and off road tyres plus some lights etc. No idea if you can convert to LPG but we live fairly well in the sticks and have Jerry cans for the petrol for the bike so just use them for the jimny as well or if we are going into town or near a petrol station to check sheep on grass keep we just take the jimny and fill it right up.

Tbh had a go with a neighbours diesel ranger and although better than our old gators I don’t think i could live with the noise on the road at full belt, so thought maybe a petrol one onto lpg but ringing around this morning can’t find anyone willing to install a tank at sensible money so think just make do with the quad …….and thermals. Currently tow quad between blocks of land with the pickup and can’t seem to find much better tbh for our situation, but that system falls down when you need to tow a snacker or bale of silage 🥶
