This is part of the issue though, farmers being encouraged to subsidise their farming with wedding barns, glamping and a farm shop and then calming it ‘agri business’ . It’s not agri business, it’s subsidising production in many cases with another business, simple as.
this has all detracted from the business of growing and is part of the reason why actual farming is so stagnant and so reliant on being propped up.

This is true to a great extent. Without that there would be a lot less farming done imo.

I can’t see farmers who stop producing letting it out because at low prices it would provide a living for all parties. I don’t see rents reducing to help this as there’s no point renting land out for minimal return so many would just leave it bare.

The future of land and farming in this country will be very different in 5/10 years imo. Sad situation.

not so sure its agri business more just business or making a living from your skills and assets which is part farming part whatever

Yes no issue with that, but subsidising farming through other businesses is bad for farming itself. I know there are many who also have both successful farming and other businesses running alongside each other that don’t need topping up by one

Seems reading all the replies to the question of net income that uk farming is very reliant on various government schemes.i left the uk after the foot and mouth in 2001/2. IACS and beef subs were flavour of the month back then. It appears that a host of schemes have come and gone since then. Being out of touch with ABC to XYZ abbreviation scheme it very hard to see if it’s helped the farming industry.
Over the past five years my farm profit has ranged from 110$ to 195$ an acre. That includes all my variables. Equipment costs, labour which is minimal, rents which is only on 80 acres, insurances, property tax, fuel farm equipment insurance, and maintenance costs. My equipment covers a lot of acres and any contract work is not included in the per acre profit. If I was to sit down and charge out every minute of my and my wife’s time and also do an hourly cost for every piece of equipment that per acre number would change some but from my accountants numbers that’s a pretty close number. Keep in mind that the past five years here have been decent years.

Sat in on a zoom meeting today about the industry in general and 80% (approx 30 people) all thought nothings going to change and ELMS will cover BPS. Blissfully unaware the rug is about to be pulled from under them.
I've had a similar conversation recently....I truly believe too many in our industry 'choose' ignorance as it's then a convenient excuse, rather than taking responsibility. This time it'll be different as ignorance will mean things go pop.

Subsidies have been present for such a long time in one form or another farmers have become institutionalised and I think some genuinely can't comprehend the possibility of them ending, reality may only set in when the cheques start bouncing. The arrival of the sub is a farming tradition, a time when dealers dust off the red carpets or in the case of a poor year the contractors and suppliers finally get paid. It's a culture where biggest is best and profit doesn't enter into the equation. There are interesting times ahead when things start to change.
