It was a wet and windy one but not much worse than last night. North Calgary got wiped out with hail but it didn’t really drop any here.

I know it isnt a tornado, but it is something that intrigues me somewhat, in that I often wonder what the experience of being in a tornado area and one comes over your property whilst you are bunkered down, must be a full on nerve attack. Have you / do they have tornados where you are B?

Yes. There was a tornado south of me two weeks ago. A bunch were spotted farther south last night however they haven’t confirmed if they touched down yet.

A couple years ago there was one at a nearby town. Got pictures of it from the end of the driveway.

Usually if there’s any rotation in the storms they get the warnings out ASAP. Radio, phones, TV.

They seem to be more frequent these days but it could just be people have cameras so handy to take photos and social media lets you hear about it instantly.

Ah, OK, my apologies for misunderstanding the post...

Have you experienced one personally, and had to use one of those bunker kits we hear of?

We’ve gone into the basement before. Bunkers are more an American thing where they get the big tornadoes frequently. Had tornado drills in school.

I’ve been close to them, as in they touch down on the property so you can see the damage after. The one a few years ago was the only one I’ve seen first hand though. Never been close enough to hear them.

The storm yesterday did more damage across a larger area than pretty much any tornado here would do, except for a rogue one like the Black Friday tornado, and the one that hit a campsite and trailer park not too far from me. However those tornados caused fatalities, I'm not sure they caused as much in cost of damages. I’ll try and get some photos of what it did posted here, and a map showing the area.

So here's a few photos I found on Twitter. If you use that at all, just go search for #abstorm, you'll see plenty more. You'll see the great shots the stormchasers post too. Really phenomenal sights, although most of them aren't of the storm that caused this.

These are all in the NE corner of Calgary.

Here are a couple crops from a farmer I know. I've heard all their fields were hit. They farm just around 4200 acres.

This one was Canola.

No clue what this was. (Crops are about 3-6" high right now, could have been higher down where they are.)

Here is a current radar from tonight. Purple line is my (absolutely) accurate path of the hail in the storm. Hail started in NE Calgary and by accounts stayed fairly consistent all the way up to the northern X. Based on the scale it looks to be anywhere between 120 and 160km of destruction. Some got bigger, egg or golf ball sized hail, some was a bit smaller. Not sure how wide the path was it cut at any one point. The crops I seen up here aren't totalled like the ones above, but they're definitely mulched. We'll see if the field on the left side of the photo I posted this morning is still green in a day or so.

Fortunately I have never been caught in one of the more severe Hail Storms in the UK, but we do get them and the records below give an insight to the larger ones.
Excluding the damage etc that can happen during these events as that is not something I wish upon anyone, especially loss of life, the cloud formations are graphically amazing for some of the large storms we see being recorded.

Over an inch of rain again last night. Has to bring the Friday, Saturday, Sunday total close to 4. If not more.

I need a better rain gauge as my good one broke so I’m not trusting the little one I have now ?

Due to zero sunspots this year forecast is for much greater atmospheric electrical activity as seen recently. The other part of this which remains to be seen is a hard winter??? Reducing sun activity up to 2035 is forecast to make the world colder contrary to global warming claims. I think the lower pollution due to Kungflu will have an influence both this summer and winter.
Up to now our top temperatures have been below 25C where crops shut down and with 35mm of rain this month so far looks ok. Now looking to get 25C+ midweek but I will believe it when it happens for us as it is rare.

The little chickies are three weeks old today. Their little shed gets fairly hot most days now so they’ve got a larger pen outside that they really enjoy. Today and tomorrow are both approaching 30^ so right now it’s after 9 pm and they’re still out bouncing around. Haven’t dared leave them out when I’m not home yet, so they have to make do inside while I’m at work. But this week at least, that means they get to enjoy afternoons and evenings!

You can see where the truck topper originally was and they ate the grass down to the dirt. Little dinosaurs

If you are worried about the heat in the daytime, all they need is plenty of water and some shade. They can easily handle 30* with both. Cover the window on the truck cap to give them a little more shade there, and make sure the windows are open on it so they can catch a breeze.

They don’t have access to outside when I’m not at home.

All their heat lamps get shut off in the shed and they have a window open and a fan on but it still gets muggy in there. Chances of them overheating are slim as long as the pen inside keeps expanding as they grow.

They’re not in a well fenced area. Not too worried about something eating them but they keep getting out and going exploring. When I can hear their peeps of panic I can go rescue them but I don’t trust them on their own yet

Like any livestock, you can give them a brand new pen with lots of yummies and the first thing they do is find every hole to escape out of.
