So with winter usually comes my expansion of house plants for greenery. Which then proceed to die fairly quickly. Last winter I thought I might try my hand at a planted aquarium but after purchasing a used tank off Kijiji, I decided the way I was planning was going to be too expensive. So the tank has just sat here.

Started doing some more research last month for a method that, if it works, will be much more cost efficient. So I’ve been working on setting it up! Started substrate on Friday and filled and planted on Saturday.

Water has settled nicely by today so I’ve got the pump and heater placed as well as a woody decoration. I have got a couple pieces of real wood picked out but they’re currently soaking so that they’ll sink. Otherwise I’ll just have bobbing roots.

If all things work right, and the plants don’t die, then it should cycle and stabilize itself in a couple of months and I can try adding some fish! Next week I might be able to go dig some slough mud and water up for some bacteria.

And it’s just in time. Today the world went white.

Weaned the two calves at home beginning of the week. They didn’t think you could eat a silage bale. I was about ready to give in and give them a yearling as a friend to teach them but they figured it out on day 4.

Cut the ice for the cows. They were so impressed with my exertion that nobody even had a sip.

Got a big one coming in this weekend. For you Brits looking to move here... this is part of why land is cheaper in Saskatchewan :ROFLMAO:

If you can see this little tiny photo.... I remember 2013 when Red Deer got that record. If anyone can remember years back when I posted photos at the feedlot of snowbank as high as the wind fence and curled over the calves like big waves, that was those storms. We pretty much had one a week/every two weeks that year. Colours are the expected snowfalls for this weekend.

And then this in the spring of 2013 I think...

But neither came close to the time I was skieing (spelling?) In Andorra with yfc, where we had close to 1meter of snow in 12 hrs.

We also had snow like that......what a nightmare with sheep lambing.

Spring 13 was a nightmare, where ever you went there was dead lambs, our twins were in full swing lambing out side, and the ewes just walked away with one lamb and left the other to the elements. The hill ewes, where the pic with the tractor was taken, just took it in there stride, all huddled together, so there was a big patch with no snow, so they just took their turn to lamb there and then wonder off when the lamb was strong enough.

Spring storms are their own kind of hell.

November ones can just crater into the deep freeze. The ones in ‘13 stuck us deep into -30s for weeks. That was the winter I got frostbite and peeled the tips of three fingers.

I was up east of lloydminster in 03 for 9 months, they were having a bit of a "drought" for a couple of years, so didn't have much snow, didn't mind the cold to much, but had a blast of -50 wind chill for a couple of days towards the end of march, now that felt bloody cold.

It’s always the wind that sucks. -30 isn’t that bad when you’re used to it and not in shorts. But get a stiff breeze then and it makes life biting.

Storm isn’t bad here. Actually fell in the quiet between two systems for the most part. Rain and wind yesterday. Snow and wind last night and today. Not amounted to much but it’s made a few drifts here and there. Ventured out this afternoon and the roads were fine.

Meanwhile in Saskatchewan...

We were on the edge of the big storm so didn’t have much snow over the weekend. Just some rain and a lot of wind. But yesterday we gave the cows a cozy bed since winter has arrived.

Glenn didn’t want to get up to eat today. Can’t blame him, today was miserable out.

The dogs also found their own beds. Although I think Conn is just pretending that he actually used the ladder.
