Getting a little dry

Denmark had the most rain for march in 42 years. We had 108mm as monthly national average on the 17th of march (which was the 42 year old mark).
I still can't spread fertiliser on about 10% of my grain area, because it's too wet to travel.
We just started drilling spring barley yesterday.

Sorry to hear that, though it might mean we have an export market for malting barley :sneaky:

Possibly. Unlike 2017, we had excellent conditions for establishing winter crops in 2018, so there won't be too much spring barley grown to begin with i think.

I personally hate the stuff with a vengeance, as i think my personal record is about 50% approved for malting of the total crop. I can't seem to figure the correct yield potential when i apply fertiliser, so the protein level is never within range. This year i drill a feed variety and will see if i can find a way to convert it to calf feed instead.

This cold is doing more harm than any dry. Another day struggling to get over 7 deg and a cutting easterly wind
2 more days and that should change. But no rain at all in the 2 week forecast. Plants will start to move as soon as it warms up but will they have enough to drink?

Planning on a re-run of last year, but with a fraction of the soil moisture we had this time last year.

A train wreck is very possible.

Yesterday i managed to shake to bits a section of Hardi sprayer boom driving at 8kph over the tyre prints left by the digestate rig .....

I still have the odd drain running so I think it’s fine here for a bit longer
If we had any drains there is no chance they would be running, just not had any decent rains all winter. When I get chance I’ll look through my records and see when we last had over an inch in a day, it won’t be this year.

What drill did you use to establish the wheat?

Yes, there’s no soil moisture reserves to keep us going this year. I feel I’ve done all I can to prepare for a dry time. I’ve cut the planned N back 20% with the option of foliar application of the last 30kg if we do get some rain, I’m looking to keep chemical spend as low as I dare without being too exposed if the weather does change.

In all of last year we had 19mm sunday 14 oct and 17mm 27 May...(the latter was hugely important and not too far away much more fell)...a few random days of 10 /11mm and every other bit was single digit.

Even if they were it is not evidence the profile is fully recharged ...
Something of a dogma imho
We had some running last week but the water is taking path of least resistance in my view

Dryer at 4ft than at 1 (do you have that depth ?)
