Getting a little dry

Even if they were it is not evidence the profile is fully recharged ...
Something of a dogma imho
We had some running last week but the water is taking path of least resistance in my view
You’re right. Straight down a crack through dry soil and out into a drain does nothing for a crop.

If we had any drains there is no chance they would be running, just not had any decent rains all winter. When I get chance I’ll look through my records and see when we last had over an inch in a day, it won’t be this year.

I don't want 1" days in winter just makes the drains work overtime. Dec was wet think we had 92mm ish, march was also fairly wet. I am glad we drilled the spring barley in early March as that would have been an issue with the last few weeks of slightly drier conditions. At least we haven't had the same as last spring anyway that's a bonus.

That’s the difference with drained and free draining land. I want water to move through the soil profile to top up the depleted soil moisture reserves at depth, if we don’t get a good soaking it never gets down the profile to store for later.

A week on and now it’s the cold slowing things down. Bloody freezing here at the moment at 5 degrees and a strong wind.

Hint of rain Monday night in the forecast.

And it seems they're worried about salmon going up the river with the low flow that there currently is... mind you it doesn't help that the big weir is breached ' in town '.. apparently...

So. A 1984 then. Spud growers pumping hard ( ohhh matron ) day and night from April onwards irrigating spuds. In those days there were quite a few early spud growers in Pembs. Still quite wet till June in '76, I believe, so I ain't going to call it a 1976.

1976 was damper in June than last year, it was the heat and winds in June/July that finished crops off prematurely.
