Getting A Main Water Connection

Aye-up,

We have been on a shared water system at our bit of land for the last few years. The property at the top of the lane is to be sold and because it has the only main water meter along the lane the agents think it will be a complication that potential buyers won’t like. I can understand that.

The main goes up the lane past our gate. I can get the pipe put in along our drive to the sheds so I’m wondering what it might cost to have a meter installed and connected. Any idea?

Cheers, Pete

When i had mine connected 2 years ago for a new build was £900 they literally just connect installed a metre and put a plastic chamber in. I dont think you can object to the price, they adopt a take it or leave it policy. That was with welsh water. Other utilities might be different

Doing one at ther moment, been fleaing off neighbour's supply since year dot, and now getting it straight before it all changes hands, or get hit for share of massive leak ,etc.
Main is in road verge along side our hedge, but have still had to pay Anglian Water about £1150 +vat. for 25mm connection to field supply.

Believe that they are obliged to provide a meter, to an existing supply,if you request one, if their pipe layout does not facilitate this, then it may be their problem. I had a similar problem in Kent. They were trying to force meters on us, but we were a spur off a pubs, water supply and not an easy fix, they just left us both alone as it was their problem!

My advice is check you deeds, if they have to supply you it should be in both sets. We were part of a larger farm that has had bits sold off and there has been problems with the water supply with when fields have been sold. If only costs you a £1000, do a jig and pay up quick.
We have a pipe that travels about a mile over two fields, as it was obviously cheaper at the time when the land was owned by the same family than paying for it to go down the side of the road. Its going to cost £2000 just for the pipe to lay it down the road.

Tell them you need a new supply for a water trough just on your land, shouldnt cost more than £500, when its installed dig your pipe in to wherever you need it.thats what we did when we had a shite pressure due to little pipes.

We did a new connection for a trough in a paddock and at the same time a separate connection for a property for sale, which was using the same spurred off old pipework. The biggest and daftest cost was a Public Notice to close the road while the meters were being fitted in a grass verge. Narrow, Class C and that cost was £800 + night time extra £300 which we claimed back, plus VAT.
From memory, the meters and connections and a bloke to check the water for coliforms  as one section was a domestic supply, was around £1000 and we did all the trenching, back filling and bought / laid the pipes.

A separate meter for just the agricultural trough was no less expensive. So we were grateful to share the SWW cost with the seller of the bungalow. We also laid another pipe in the trench for when the final property on the old line is sold. No one is digging that paddock up again. And it's a long way round by road.

So is the person selling the house going to pay for your new water meter ? It's their gain not yours.

I shan’t ask them to pay a penny. I have been there four years and despite me asking many times if I owe them any money they haven’t taken a penny from me.

They won’t be my neighbours much longer but hopefully still my friends.

I had an existing pipe reconnected to mains last summer when neighbour was doing same for his new build house. We split the costs and he ran new pipe across his land for me as mine would otherwise have run under his new house. It cost me a little over 650 inclusive by splitting connection n infrastructure charge, he paid a little more as he was having a household supply. From memory it would have cost me a little over a thousand if we hadn't connected when he did as we would have paid two connection charges. For that I got new meter, meter box and benefit of the severn trent infrastructure. Only turned it on last week as running out of rain water, what a blessing will now connect a few tanks in to save me running round the paddock grazing system. Difficulty is trying to get someone to bill me as Severn Trent no longer do the billing?
