Getting concerned

Another 19 mm today
that is pushing 250 since 23 September
any system or drill can’t work on the heavy soils round here if it has been planted this autumn it will not yield
the only heavy land round here that will have good crops will be land that has had more the 50% gras in the last 40 years
this is irispective of drill type cultivation system
the best system is land well drained which has been moled since 2018s dry summer
ploughed and cultivated land is now full to the plough depth

the only year in comparison is 1992 when it rained on 20 September and dropped 160 mm but this was followed by a dry spell with drilling from 10 Oct to 20 Oct
we have had plenty of years when drilling the end of the last week of September has been the last opertunity

Suck it up ... but ... if anyone comes on here saying they've sold wheat for £200 next august ... they can swivel .

I was talking to a merchant yesterday, who said a number of farmers were ordering spring wheat as they were desperate to cover forward sales .

Wouldn’t give me a price on seed though. Said you could put your name on some, then say if you wanted it when they’d determined the price( what they can get away with )

I put my name on some Belepi, but it can stay fallow if that’s the case. Can’t see the point in growing more barley.

Bloody merchants charge a fortune for seed and fertiliser and as little as possible for our grain.hope they all catch a cold over fertiliser sales which I understand are very very slow

It will be off the heap then. This attitude that farmers will bear the brunt of it while everybody else profits from it won't last long.

I suspect that's where the £600 a ton spring barley seed will be coming from

I wouldn't worry. It's in the ground and it's alive. Some of the best yields come from crops that look crap all winter. Best ever yield we had here was from Brigadier mauled in late. Looked sick all winter. Agronomist had written it off. Stalled the grain elevator at harvest.
