I dont think one can ignore winter just so cost per acre looks favourable against another crop.Winter has to look after itself or isn't done. But relatively small amount of quality silage, own grain/straw/pulses will still leave a margin.
Any grain own/or brought in still has to be budgeted at market price. Same with silage and straw.
If winter isn't done at all, stores bought in spring sold in autumn, one must not forget purchase costs. Commission, levies, haulage all x2 and tb testing. That lot will inroad into margins.
