We are going to try a new heat exchanger on our Merlo 40.7 engine. The cooling system must have a load of gunk and sludge in it. One suggestion was to put washing powder in with water to move the oil ?
any thoughts welcome.

I would use Forte Bio degreaser. its great stuff and works very quickly and made for the job. Probably get it a bit cheaper if you shop around for it in the motor trade.

There was a thread on this a few years ago. We had a heat exchanger go flushed it out repeatedly then used washing powder can't remember but it is better to use either bio or non bio some one will tell us I'm sure. I used the steam cleaner took the lanse off and put it on the top of the rad to put hot water in with the engine running and drain cock open keep it going til it's clean took about 2 hours

I recently cleaned the cooling system on my Manitou. Two cycles with dishwasher tabs and it was still mucky, then I bought some proper rad flush and it came up sparkling.

5 quid for a bottle but it sorted out the overheating problem.
