Glorious Twelfth

It has been a few years since I last shot grouse and I'll be sad if the weather in the spring has scuppered most of this years sport for others.
My most notable day in the field was a walked up 12th with my now gone cocker in front. I shot a brace for two shots out of only 3 birds shot that day and my bitch flushed and retrieved them at 9mths old. That day was before many more days on the foreshore or in the coverts with bigger bags but none will ever have the glow of that day about them.

Had to leave 2 big patches in a field I was topping today because pheasant chicks were hopping everywhere 😁

I’ve never seen a grouse let alone shot one. If I’m very lucky I may get a walked up chance later in the season.

Not going to make our usual walked up day this year , this lad will be missing being back on the hill more than me.

No grouse down here in Devon but been pleasantly surprised by partridge broods.

Fully feathered up and flying well.....just a shame they are of the French variety and not proper ones..

Are there now no Red Grouse left on Dartmoor? Knew numbers were VERY low but i thought there were still one or two about. No doubt @egbert will be able to give us a definitive answer.

I’m not much into shooting but if they ever try and ban grouse shooting I will take it up immediately (walked up, end of season, tiny bag….cheap as possible).
Far too many people in this world trying to tell others how to live their lives. Generally urbanites dictating to country people.

I used to travel north regularly for walked up Grouse days. Unfortunately haven't been for few years. It is fantastic sport in exceptional countryside. Nothing quite like a day on the hill shooting over pointers. I have even had the opportunity to have a day taking Grouse with Falcons over pointers. No released birds with Grouse shooting, just real wild birds the result of creating the right habitat for them to thrive in and a valuable source of income to those rural areas.
