Hi everyone, I have a John Deere 440 tractor with a 1070 loader, it is a manual tractor, the problem is it will go into gear but won't move/drive, does anybody know what the problem could be.

You say it goes in gear ok but if clutch is faulty the gears will scrape and make all sorts of noises as you put it in gear
It goes into the gears ok without any scraping or noise, it just won't start driving. We had the PTO mower on the back going at the time when it stopped working.

Do you think it's a job we can fix ourselves or is it a specialist job needing special tools?

Worthwhile checking the gear linkage, if there was no unwanted bangs etc when it stopped working could be a simple problem such as a roll pin has come out the linkage somewhere.
Have someone in the cab working the gear stick and another check the linkage out.

Is this a tractor built in the late 1950's and you are in the USA or Canada?

This could be caused by anything from stripped clutch hub or driveshaft splines to a range box failure to the crown wheel and pinion, diff, or final drive issue. If it has independent brakes, stomp on one, then the other while in gear. This will give you an idea about whether it is the final drive.
It is probably that basic that it doesn't even have a range box. I don't think late 50's Deere all had such a thing.

It would make more sense if it was a Deere 1070 tractor with a 440 loader but hey-ho we'll take it that the OP knows what he's got.
