Going rate for board and lodging for a week or so

I recently worked with a self employed fuel driver. He was staying away for some weeks with a job. The place he stayed charged £150/week for en suite room, breakfast and cooked dinner. This also includes all his washing.

His employer paid him £275/week digs and food allowance.
For 150 quid a week they would not be staying in my house , add another 100 or buy a tent.

I'm in the wrong game I've got 80 cows to feed and house and don't make £150 a week profit, give me a lodger for that and I'd retire now!
It's always the case ,we are on such small drawings if any but work for other businesses and their travelling and expenses are well paid and looked after and do well out of it.
Mileage, overnight money, away money etc etc.
So nothing new to pay or charge.
No one is a charity or forcing anyone to come are they.

Yes you do! :banghead:

I price the job as I would a local one, then work out accommodation prices, normally £50/£60 per day, work out how that would be broken down into to the daily work rate, then give that price for the job, if customer is happy I work away, if not, I sleep in my own bed without loosing money.

Just to be clear, I put a ? On the end of that on the basis that I assumed that self employed would factor in all their costs to the price of a job.

Yes definitely, have two jobs on atm in centre of York and Chester, costs inc £100/day/person, bed, breakfast and dinner, both cities not cheap for accommodation though.

Thank you.

This post seems to have split us all in opinion. He’s very good value but that’s mostly because of where he lives and where we live and not much to do with skill sets.

I will speak to him and see what he feels is fair, for once the the TFF sound board has not been conclusive!

Labour in your area is expensive. So you're getting a cheap worker in from out of the area?

And you're expecting to charge him room and board as well?

Is that a fair summary?

He asked us if we wanted his services, we said we may do.

He offered us £X hr to come south and do as much work as we wanted. He asked us to pay half the transport costs. He then asked where he could stay, was there space with us.

It never occurred to me that his hourly rate for working away from home did not include him living away from home.

We have offered him a bed at Mums, which he was very happy with. I’m now trying to tie up the loose ends, final rates being one of them hence this post.

Not sure I’m much further forward. If the contractor was a plumber or sparky would I be thinking any different, I’m not sure.
Not sure if I would put someone 'at mums' unless I knew quite a bit about them .
