What's the going rate for relief milking? I milk at various different set ups ranging from 8 a side swing over to 12 a side double up....cow numbers vary from 70-250, but everywhere I go I get the cows in, set up parlour milk and wash down....wondering what I should be charging to match others?

Don't know what area your in but in sw Scotland there's a shortage and it's getting worse so I'd say aim high. Here 100 cows gathered into collecting area for milker through a 10/20 will be forty quid if you can get someone.

£25 a milking we pay, cows in yard when he arrived wash and go until we slow down with drying off then he fetches cows and someone normally sets fences in the morning so just an easy job for him then. I don't want to pay more than that so us fetching cows works. Me and dad have every other weekend off. Dad works with the relief milker so just milk and go, I work with another lad who helps me do the jobs I need more hands with. Works well for us.

A lot of people here in Ireland saying that labour availability is the new quota, along with land availability. Chatting to a guy this morning who is going to buy two mobile homes, stick them in the yard, and head to Eastern Europe to try and get staff.
