I bought a john deere 3040 1984 little over a year ago knowing it had steering issues. By watching some bundy bears shed videos putting together a basket case 2030 he mentioned my tractor was very similar to the point it was exactly the same for what I was doing. I split it. Found broken hydro pipe in the case. Replace while I was in there worn out disc's in the hi low, pto brake, Removed hydro pump. All new o rings. When I first got it and ran it before 5he big repair. I noticed a steam of hydro fluid running down from in front of gear shifter. While I had it apart I removed the shifting mechanism and replaced the gasket where it bolts down to the tractor. Also replaced the gasket where the pto bolts on to the shifter plate. Sorry for long story. Leak was still there after I got it running. So I removed shift mechanism again remove the bottom plate and replaced those gaskets which were very different than what was on there. But. j.d. parts said there were only 2 types and the ones that came on it were not one of them. Well after I put it back on and started it. It's still leaking. Has anyone had this problem any advice would be appreciated. Leaks look like it's coming from between the shift cover and where steering column bolts to the frame. you can't see exactly where it's coming from. I wonder if it's internal seeping where the shift rods for pto and hi low cover is but saw no orings when I took them out. Thanks for any advice.

3040? Steering column bolts to the frame which is just in front of gear shifter?

I'm guessing that you are not from around here and that this is an open-station model, not an SG2 cab?

Yes bolts just in front of shifter. It's a cab tractor. And not sure where here is but I'm from Kansas. I used floor jack to get cab up and crack in in half.

Steering column bolts in front of shifter. It is cabbed
and I'm from Kansas. Not many of these tractors around here I don't think.

'Here' is rather useful information and best positioned below your name and avatar [if you choose an avatar]. You see, this is a British based forum and most, but far from all contributors are UK based. That may not matter but in this case it does because US 40 series are not like UK ones I suspect. It sounds like yours is more like an European 30 series but I'm just guessing. It certainly doesn't sound like the cab that was standard in the UK, which was the SoundGard 2

Love to Dorothy.

Oh and do send pictures. They are worth a thousand words [if taken well with some context].

Just as I thought, totally different to those sold in the UK and probably in Europe. The cab does look somewhat similar to the Sekura cab that was optional on Euro 30 series, but not quite the same. I noticed the turbocharger and there was no turbo on 3040 here and none on the 3340 either, only being introduced on Mkii 3640 or 3650 models if I remember correctly.
The top cover with the gear levers is also different and more like the budget SE models available here and ones with the very budget Secura cabs, only available on four cylinder models. All 3040 here are 90 engine horsepower with SG2 cab and remote side-mounted gear levers.

No doubt a JD mechanic could help you, based on the design and experience with the centre-lever versions of the 2650 and 2850 which were sold here. If you are really lucky an American person with knowledge of this will read and reply.
