Good noise cancelling headphones

I had a pair of Sony and a pair of Bose from Amazon delivered on a Friday which was great as I could give them both a good trial over the weekend.

I'm lucky enough to have an Astell & Kern AK Jr Audio Player and after pairing both headphones I searched for a Fleetwood Mac album I knew which was in FLAC format (far better than Mp3) and put on the Bose set. Wow, far better than the wired Sennheiser Momentum that was to be replaced. I listened to the whole album in one go which is surprising in this house as there is always something happening!

So, onto the Sony's, Wow and a few more wows for good measure, excellent all-round sound and the noise cancelling is fantastic (apparently the phone rang twice and I missed it both times!).

I was wearing them as the Bose were packed back up to go back to Amazon.

You, sir, are clearly a connoisseur of headphones!

Respect :notworthy:

Nice choice on the momentums - the top line of bose are very good at noise cancelling - but theres a loss of quality of sound - Sennheiser have some fab noise cancelling ones that are better with quality as you would expect but are not AS good as the boses from what ive read.

i keep the nice phones indoors .. best place for it and the FLACs - outside ..mp3s will do.

Ha-ha, I'm not too sure about that!

Remember Black Friday is not too far away and as the Sony's have been out for at least a year(?) there could well be deals around.

With regards to the Momentums, mine are really tight over the ears and can become uncomfortable very quickly I wouldn't say I have large ears either! Not a problem with the Sony's.

You can have too much noise suppression and miss important announcements or warnings either on a plane or when working. We were warned about this on a Health & Safety course after people had been hurt when they missed hearing shouted warnings or approaching machinery.

I'm looking for a set as I have a flight to NZ and back early next year and I can't sleep with lots of background noise.
Wired or wireless
Must be on ear not in ear
Will be used with iPod or iPhone
Budget max £200
Any ideas please?

Got my daughter some Beats for Christmas and I have to say wow. They are incredible things. £150 wireless with built in microphone. Synced to her iPad and iPhone within seconds and the battery is truly 40 hours.

I’m not into headphones, but my wife has been asking for a set of Bose over ear ones for a year or two, she tried a set on at the airport this June, again she said they are amazing, I’m just not sure on the budget as they seem to go from 150-300+ which is the same reason she’s still waiting!! I know I know, I’m being a tight arse. But any way she reckons she’s tried quite a few and the Bose are excellent.
I buckled and got the wife a set this xmas, Bose 35s II, £219 at curry’s, I’m told they are better than she had hoped for, so just over your budget but sound like they are worth it, judging by some other comments too.

I bought Sony WH 1000 XM3 in the Black Friday sale £220. Very impressive so far (y)

Thanks for the tips, everyone

Do noise cancelling headphones work ok for hearing protection compared to standard builders ear defenders? A tad extravagent don't get me wrong.....but I'm just curious how they compare?

I have some electronic shooting ear defenders I wouldn't be without so I guess these act likewise.

I’m not sure they are designed to mitigate the high pressure percussion of a shot, just cancel out general noise.

How about a trial on a shoot day? Maybe wear some black clothing and some trendy shades. An automatic shotgun too, for the full “urban” look. Let us know how you get on and how it was received please :p

Looking for a set for work, Noise cancelling needed for when I’m mill and mixing, might get wet when I’m power washing, and will get bumped around a bit when left in the tractor/combine. So thinking more of a cheaper set, not to bothered about sound quality as long as it’s clear enough.
Any pointers? Thanks
