Google Earth KML Import into FieldBee / Field Navigator

Hi,

Anyone know of a simple way to import field boundaries from Google Earth into FieldBee or Field Nav?
Getting various errors, even after using an online converter to get SHP files out the other end.
Any tips gratefully received.

Cheers

How the RPA map fields to the m² from satellite maps is beyond me... then against it seems to be beyond them too.

I tried using google earth to map some fields for AgOpenGPS and didn't get on with it. It was way too vague. I went back to using an improvised bout marker on the he widest cultivator. That method feels much more precise. I was very pleasently surprised too how well an f9p receiver coped with overhanging trees too, which were a serious issue for the Trimble system when previously mapping fields.

Is it that you can convert the KML to a shape file but then field bee wont open it? Can you open the shp file in notepad and open another shape file exported from FieldBee and compare the two?

My experience learns that the background maps of Google Earth, are NOT accurate enough to use with the Fieldbee app. There is a deviation of several meters. You can not use it in the Fieldbee app.

If you want to use exact field boundaries in the Fieldbee app, you can add new field (or adjust existing field) by walking at the field border with the Fieldbee receiver in your hand.

If you have RTK fix, you should do it only once for every field.

I fully agree. I was surprised how far out the Google maps were, although it should not be a surprise really, and that was without using RTK.

When I started using RTK, it really brought it home the variation, 5-6m in some cases.

Millions of images taken from orbit stitched together and positioned using relatively few ground reference points.... The field of view might be 30miles wide. if the camera pass was directly over the center of your yard then fields further away from the yard have been imaged at an angle. For a smooth overlap each image has to be cleverly stretched and skewing to compensate and then wrapped around a globe. With all the complexities involves it still astounds me the images are accurate within miles let alone meters.

Id agree with the imagery comments, usually see at least 5-6 meter differences from images. I'd strongly recommend using your display to record the boundary. We have a Catalyst Device which you can plug into your mobile to record boundary's which will then give you better than 1 Meter accuracy free, with a subscription available to get you down to 1cm. Then you can record in which ever app you decide on phone

If Nsoiled works with the FieldBee, he pays for the subscription of the FieldBee app.
Why should he pay for another app (catalyst device) while he can make the field borders by walking along the field border with his Fieldbee antenne? Accuracy with Fieldbee RTK is 1 or 2 cm!

Thats fine, but some people dont want to have to remove system and power up etc. That was my 1st suggestion that he used his existing system

With the FieldBee, you only have to take Fieldbee antenna in one hand (it has internal battery) and your smartphone or tablet in the other hand.
Wireless connection between both.

Not very complicated, isn't it?
