Google Mail

Anybody else having problems with google mail. Have been using Google Mail since 2008 without any problems until 3 weeks ago when my email count suddenly went down from over 5000 to 60. Looked into it and any email over 90 days was no longer there. Got onto G-Mail and they insisted that I change password and then they would try and restore. Within 48 hours my 5000 emails where recovered. Fine until today when the same has happened with only 80 emails remaining but this time advised they cannot be recovered. Any suggestions of where to take my email account as G Mail obviously cannot be trusted to keep my data secure.

Can you access your email from another device or web browser to confirm?

Thanks. Have two apple computers one on firefox the other on safari. Looks like a problem with safari as all the emails are still there on firefox yet only 80 emails showing on safari.

Maybe not. Have just checked problem exists on both Safari and Firefox on this machine but could be something to do with the HTML version of google used to get around the out of date browser.

Are you running on the latest version of Safari and all updates applied?

I think that is the problem my old Macbook (white brick) cannot be updated to the latest version of Safari whereas the MacBook Air is on the latest version. It has resulted in the brick having to use the html version of gmail for the last year but that was never a problem until the emails disappeared. We still use the brick for all printing as the laser printer will not work with the MacBook Air.

I think you've found your email problem.

What's the issue printing with the MBA and laser printer?

There is another way around it. Rather than using a browser, you should be able to use a traditional email client (like Mail on the Mac or iPhone) for your email needs.

You would need to set it up to access Gmail using the IMAP protocol - this synchronises the contents of Gmail with your email client, rather than pulls them down as the POP protocol does. So it plays much more nicely when you are accessing your email from multiple computers and or phones/tablets. The other benefit is that you have a local copy of all your email (which can be backed up like anything else) so should you not have internet access then you still can read your email.

Laser printer is a Samsung but due to its age could not get a driver for it for installation on the MBA. Loathe to scrap a perfectly good laser printer/ scanner/ photo copier just because I cannot get a driver that works on the MBA.
