It’s a p!ss take tbh
Hence why more and more lambs are going to Leek or Holmfirth or even further afield.
The lack of competition is if anything their biggest weakness, they are getting complacent. For a market facility as good as they've got and a catchment as big as they've got, they should really be selling double the number and hosting double the sales imo!

We haven't got much choice regards a decent fat cattle market round here, not since Newark and Chelford shut.
The next nearest for us would be either Melton, Drayton or Selby. All of which are over an hour and a half away v. 10mins to Bakewell (for ourselves anyway)!
Seem to remember Bakewell has always been strong on commission, Chelford got up too 5% by the end! Had many an argument with Williams about it.

We’ve said that for years, not long after Ian Lawton retired in fact. I can be at Bakewell within an hour from home, the facilities are excellent. Shame the boss is a plonker. I bought quite a few suckler outfits last summer in there. And what I didn’t buy I pushed a good way if you get my drift, did 3 sales on the trot. Bought every time, if I’d been up North buying the auction would have been chasing me after the first sale. Bakewell have never rung me once asking if I wanted any more sucklers! Graham from Leek rang so I bought the rest of what I needed from him instead!

You can’t keep a large business like Bagshaws going by sitting back and just waiting for people too come too you! A lot of his store lamb producers have gone further than Leek too! Lot of Derbyshire lambs in Skipton & Bentham now.

As far as I’m concerned he’s grand. He knows I’m always in the market for continental heifers with continental bull calves. Always rings when he’s got a couple coming, can be there in 45 minutes so I don’t mind nipping over on a Saturday morning. More often than not buy at least 1 outfit. Always asks if I’ve any barren feeding cows for him. Grand bloke, even if I can’t understand what he’s saying when he’s selling... 😂😂

Don’t take this the wrong way but I doubt you get up early enough too catch Graham out!

My grandad reckons he was exactly the same as a young man. He always felt sorry for Graham, he’s never had a progressive backer too the mart. Bury & Hilton never had fire in them too let Graham really fly. Now Bagshaws are better, Mark & Meg are mad keen and between them and Graham you wouldn’t think it was the same place when you compare throughput now with 10 years ago. But I’ve heard from inside the office at Bakewell that Alastair would happily pull the plug on Leek so that “people have too use Bakewell” then.

Got news for you pal, we DON’T.

I wouldn't be surprised! I've heard that it was bagshaws that forced leek to stop their poultry sales, just as they were getting going and getting a good following. (Even though Oli now sells at the Cheadle poultry sale)

We live 5 miles from Bakewell market and 14 from Leek... we go to Leek. The numbers of stock Leek sell through there puts the modern market at Bakewell to shame. I have had a "discussion" with the senior auctioneer at Bakewell and made my thoughts known when asked why we weren't marketing stock with them any longer. Unsurprisingly this has never been followed up with a phone call or visit to the farm. They need a day trip to some of the northern marts to see how buyers and sellers are treated. In the meantime I'll carry on going to Leek where you are always welcomed and they try their best when selling your stock.

In last 25 years bagshaws have lost?shut 5 markets... that's a lot of stock.....used to buy and sell cattle at Derby...…... I like the set up at bakewell sell a load of store lambs every sale, but the sales are getting smaller.... leeks getting more and more. Don't like the set up at Leek right job loading etc,,,,,,

Leek needs another building on that backside with a proper sheep ring in. One where more than 10 people can get round it. Needn't be anything fancy, doesn't even need seating, just something proper and a bit bigger than current. Tagged on next to the sheep pens I can't see it being to big of a job. Some outlay just for seasonal sales though perhaps.
