GPS mapping

I am looking to create a GPS map of my farm, marking field boundaries electric poles, the routes followed by utilities and the locations of irrigation hydrants and the routes folloed by the mains.
I would like to be accurate to within 1 meter for each point.
I would ideally like to store the information on a laptop and be able to mark on each point what it is to identify weather it is a hydrant or electric pole etc. So that paper copies can be printed identifying all poles and hydrants.
Could anyone tell me if this is possible and if so could they advise me on what the best system would be to carry this out with?

You can certainly create a field map, accurate to within half a metre or less. I used to map standing crops, showing the accurate size of the field, the size of the crop in it, telegraph poles, blank beds etc so I don't see why you couldn't do this for utilities etc for the whole farm.

Really I am looking for a handheld device to do this but would like to be able to put the information gathered on a desk top so that paper copies of maps can be printed.

If you are only after about 1 metre accuracy, I would consider a new smart phone sufficient (one that supports both GPS and Glonass). You might not always reach 1 metre accuracy but I cannot see it an issue compared to another option with 1 metre accuracy.

If you had RTK accuracy, then you would never need to adjust your guidance/autosteer screen but you would need offset calibration irrespectively if the accuracy was 1 metre or 1,5 metres.

Just pick up the location info from the smart phone and enter it to farmworks view or some similar PC application.

For the above application we would recommend a handheld equipped with Farm Works Mobile software, this will allow you to record your electric pylons, hydrants and routes as separate layers which you can then import into Farm Works Mapping software for editing and printing.

Farm Works Mobile software equipped handhelds also allow you to control variable rate controllers for various fertiliser spreaders if you were to consider going down this route.

Farm Works Mapping software allows you to edit data you bring in, deleting bad points from boundaries where obstacles such as trees may have caused location issues.

Would you think the above AS would be the correct option for mapping and plotting "Drains and Manholes" on the public Highway for the local highways contractors to have as a data base for "ALL" future maintenance of said drains if so I have a man at "Ringway" who could be looking for such a system.

With a Trimble handheld you can get repeatable accuracy as long as you mark on a point in a fixed, known location that the user can return to with ease such as a sign post. When you return to this location you can then re-align the GPS to counter any satellite drift.

Accuracy of Trimble handhelds is typically 1-2m, if this level of accuracy is not good enough for your application we do offer a higher end device that is RTK/VRS capable that uses slightly different software, it does however allow for returning to a location with 2cm accuracy with no need to re-align GPS.

Hope the above helps.
