Grain pads - alternatives to concrete?

What's the Red Tractor stance on this ?

All the hoops we have to jump through, yet you can tip grain outside in a heap ?

I know, it makes a mockery of the situation.
You are allowed to for a week but your supposed to declare it, last year they ‘allowed’ it for longer because of the haulage problems.

@ajd132 have you had the work done yet ajd?

If so, how's it looking?
Two weeks time, got to get a rough old shed down first then prepare the site which basically just involves scraping the grass off. Then the guys come and mix the concrete with the soil.
if it works well will be really useful going forward. The pads will only really be used at harvest so shouldn’t get too messed up. Although I went and looked at pads where the guys doing it are based in Norfolk and they looked pretty good despite being used all winter for beet.

Thanks. I'll watch with interest. We're just concreting a cattle shed, but wonder if this would have done the job. Will only get mucked out 4 times/year, and a stone floor would sort of do the job, but I hate the rutting with telehandler and stone in the FYM.

On this occasion I need to raise floor levels up above flood levels, so I'll go concrete to give me the 6" lift, but otherwise the cement stabilisation might work next time.

@Feldspar was it you who said an ex assessor told you that there is shocking grain stores that regularly get passed inspection?
I’ve seen some poor ones passed as short term but not long term. But all of them were better than tipping outside. They weren’t falling down or anything. Less chance of contamination than tipping outside in all instances I’ve seen. I have seen smart stores not cleaned out that would have more risk of contamination than old clean ones.

So do you think short term tipping outside shouldn’t be allowed?

Point of correction it was some pest controllers who said many of the stores they go to are so disgusting they cannot believe they get passed by red tractor

Off topic.
I am sure a hell of a lot of Ukrainian grain will be stored outside this year, IF they can harvest it, and the countries desperate for it will be only too glad of it.
Not good when someone thinks grain can’t be stored outside for at least a month.
Surely any farmer tipping outside will have it moved ASAP as it’s in his own interest, due to birds and deer getting at it.
