Off topic.
I am sure a hell of a lot of Ukrainian grain will be stored outside this year, IF they can harvest it, and the countries desperate for it will be only too glad of it.
Not good when someone thinks grain can’t be stored outside for at least a month.
Surely any farmer tipping outside will have it moved ASAP as it’s in his own interest, due to birds and deer getting at it.

Of course. And it certainly isn’t in a stores best interest to take stuff in that could contaminate a large bulk

The earth floor of a large straw shed , that was done using the process, to enable it to be used for temporary wet grain storage at harvest, now looks like cement.

I would have thought Cooperative grainstore companies store grain outside at harvest , especially a wet harvest as can’t see that drier capacity would ever keep up with quantity of grain coming in to be dried.

I think most farms probably do this to some extent if they are drying

If it's stored inside, then the rodents get in, but the birds are locked out, except for when shed door is open at harvest. And the outside tipping pits/grids at stores/mills, with a canopy over them, are magnets to pigeons and salmonella, with droppings all over the pits.

So nothing is perfect, and getting failed by RT for not writing down what time I washed the grain bucket won't help a jot. Especially if Mr Farmer has just been loading FYM, and it's all over the wheels, but RT doesn't ask about that, because they haven't thought about it. Which goes to show box ticking is pointless, because the RT standards department can't think of all eventualities. You've simply to use common sense.

If it's destined for one of the big central stores, it will be sampled, cleaned and dried on intake as routine.

Heaped up a pile of grain is very weatherproof,the water will not drain through the heap as you may expect, instead it runs off, only the top half inch of grain gets a little wet, below the surface there will be dust.

It’s abit worrying when you first do it and it gets rained on but as you say it’s absolutely fine.

We never have done, because we manage the intake speed to match our drier throughput (250tph @5% FW).

I've seen other stores do it where their intake is wetter and/or have less drying capacity, or where intake haulage runs into the evenings.

T’was my concern…didn’t know how robust the plastic was. Mike Mitchell in Canada did some on you tube and mostly had trouble with raccoons and deer; no mention of rats

I’ve seen rats and crows do a lot of damage to maize silage in them. No plastic is robust enough to stop a rat.

Even if the wheat is bagged bone-dry the absence of any ventilation would be perfect conditions for mycotoxins. There would be no way to cool the grain for long-term safe storage.

Crimping grain (usually barley) for feed is a different ball game though.

Excellent idea BUT still needs a good operator, so as not to spin wheels on loading shovel and make holes in the blue plastic or whatever material it is.Interesting to know what the blue material is .
Perhaps @ajd132 will contact Ben via Twitter and find out.
