Grain store, crimp storage & then livestock.

I need to store 5-600 tons of grain before it is crimped.

Ideally just drive in tip and then drive off.

That is easy but the difficult bit is how to then put it through the crimper and stack it without too much messing about and moving it around too much.

Then it would be nice to use the shed for heifers as we empty it.

Flat site with no space restrictions. Don't need to access it every day as we put a few week worth of grain in a bunker by the silage pit.

Why crimp - why not treat with urea and store under plastic ??

We use harbro maxammon which is a urea based product. Stored it outside previously in a straw bale clamp, vermin don't get in it but the rats and mice do get into the bales. Stored it for the last 10 years in sheds at another farm but we need them for young stock now.

I just make a big area with sides made up of round bales and then tip grain as it comes off the combine in that ready for crimping, cheep and easy.

Outside or in a shed?

Done the outside thing in straw clamps, don't want to do it again. I thought of maybe storing it in concrete silage pits then we could roof them if forced too in the future. Just cant use them for anything else once empty. Can't help but think a shed would be cheaper and flexible but would need to think carefully about internal layout.

Did you ever end up with much waste storing it outside? I'm about to harvest my barley and treat with urea and, with shed space limited, am considering an outdoor heap. Am I mad?!
